Chapter 15 - The First Rule Survived

The black town car pulled smoothly into the reinforced gated alley behind the Division Street safehouse, its tires crunching softly against the gravel. The heavy iron gates swung shut behind them with a resounding, automatic clank, sealing off the outside world.
Marcus parked the vehicle near the side entrance, stepping out into the crisp autumn air to clear the perimeter.
Callum didn't immediately get out of the car. He turned in his seat, looking across the center console at Sadie. The amber streetlamps filtering through the reinforced glass caught the silver glint in her eyes, highlighting the quiet strength and unbreakable resilience that had caught his attention on that freezing Tuesday night nearly a year ago.
“You know,” Callum said quietly, his voice low and rich in the confined space of the car, “the first rule of surviving a man like me is never show weakness.”
Sadie met his gaze without blinking, a confident, knowing smile playing across her lips. She reached out, her fingers resting lightly against the lapel of his tailored wool coat, right over his heart.
“And the second rule?” Sadie whispered. Callum leaned in closer, his dark eyes holding hers with absolute, unyielding devotion.
