Chapter 9 - The Trap at the O'Hare Freight Terminal

Midnight at the O’Hare private cargo terminal was a labyrinth of towering steel shipping containers, screeching overhead cranes, and freezing wind sweeping off the tarmac. This was where Viktor Sterling’s illegal shipments arrived—packaged as routine crates of imported Italian marble and antique furniture, but actually containing encrypted servers and illegal weapon components.

Inside the primary customs warehouse, Callum, Marcus, and four of the family's most trusted enforcers moved through the shadows like ghosts. Sadie sat in the passenger seat of Callum’s bulletproof town car parked a hundred yards away, monitoring the terminal’s security feed on an encrypted tablet she had hacked using the ledger codes.

“They’re moving the main container now,” Sadie’s voice crackled through Callum’s earpiece. “Bay 12. Sterling himself is on-site supervising the transfer.”

Callum clicked his mic twice in confirmation. His hand rested heavily on the grip of his Sig Sauer as he stepped out from behind a towering stack of shipping crates.

Across the wide concrete bay, surrounded by four armed guards in heavy tactical gear, stood Viktor Sterling—a tall, immaculate man in a charcoal wool overcoat, his silver hair slicked back and a cold, predatory smile playing across his thin lips.

“Callum Russo,” Sterling called out into the cavernous warehouse, spreading his arms wide as if welcoming an old friend. “I wondered when the young king would finally show his face.”

Callum did not stop walking. He closed the distance until he was twenty feet away, his dark eyes locked onto Sterling with absolute, unyielding coldness. “You sent men to threaten a civilian on my payroll, Viktor,” Callum said, his voice carrying clearly across the concrete floor. “That was your first mistake.”

“A civilian?” Sterling laughed, a dry, grating sound. “That little museum clerk has been holding the keys to my entire European portfolio. She’s no civilian, Callum—she’s an accomplice to a multi-billion-dollar acquisition heist.”

“She’s under my protection,” Callum corrected, his finger resting lightly on the trigger. “And in my world, that makes you a dead man.”

Before Sterling could signal his guards, the overhead lights in the warehouse flickered and died. Total darkness swallowed the bay for a fraction of a second—just long enough for Marcus and the enforcers to open fire from the catwalks above.
