Chapter 15 - The Fortress Unshakable

Later that night, after Marcus had gone home and the neighborhood had grown completely silent, I walked through the quiet, softly lit rooms of the house.
I paused in the hallway, looking up at the antique mahogany wall clock above the pantry.
The pendulum swung back and forth with a steady, reassuring tick-tock, tick-tock, keeping its quiet, faithful watch over the halls.
The camera lens hidden behind the glass dial wasn't recording any threats tonight; it only captured the peaceful shadows of a sleeping baby, the gleaming hardwood floors, and a mother who had reclaimed her kingdom from the ashes.
I walked over to the front door, unlocked the deadbolt just an inch to feel the cool summer night air brushing against my face, and stared out past the white porch toward the dark silhouette of the ancient oak tree standing tall against the starry sky.
The storms of the past were gone, washed away by truth, justice, and the uncompromising strength of a family that refused to break.
The fortress was secure.

The gates were closed to the wolves forever.
And as I turned off the hallway lights and walked back to my daughter's room, I knew with absolute, unshakable certainty that our story was finally, beautifully, our own.
