Chapter 8 - The Birth of a New Beginning

Four weeks later, the hospital room at St. Jude’s Memorial was filled with the soft, sweet sounds of newborn life.
I lay propped up against the hospital pillows, cradling a tiny, perfect baby girl in my arms—a healthy, beautiful infant with a full head of dark hair and my father’s stubborn little nose.
The delivery had been smooth, uncomplicated, and entirely free of stress, a stark contrast to the terrifying nightmare of the kitchen attack a month prior.
The door to the private recovery room clicked open, and Marcus stepped inside, holding a large, brightly wrapped gift box and a single, freshly cut rose from the garden outside my father’s house.
“Well, hello there,” Marcus whispered, walking over gently and looking down at the tiny bundle in my arms with an expression of pure wonder. “She is absolutely gorgeous, Claire. What's her name?”
“Her name is Clara Rose,” I smiled, looking down lovingly at my daughter. “In honor of my father, and the roses he planted that refuse to let the winter kill them.”
Marcus smiled, placing the single rose carefully on the bedside table before setting the large gift box down at the foot of the bed.
“I brought a little something for the newest resident of the fortress,” he said.
I watched as he opened the box, pulling out a handmade, beautifully polished wooden rocking chair crafted specifically for a nursery—made from the fallen branch of the very same oak tree that stood in our front yard.
“Marcus... you made this?” I asked, my voice thick with emotion.
“Took me three weekends in my garage,” he admitted, rubbing the back of his neck with a sheepish grin. “Figured a fortress needs proper furniture, and a little girl needs a safe place to dream.”
I reached out with my uninjured hand, gently placing it over his, feeling the warmth and strength of a man who had stood by my side through the darkest moments of my life.

“Thank you, Marcus,” I whispered. “For everything.”
“Always, Claire,” he replied, his eyes holding mine with a steady, unbreakable promise. “Always.”
