Chapter 13 - The Coronation of Mrs. Vitali: Stepping Into Chicago’s High Society

Three weeks after the fall of the Barone Syndicate, the grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel on Magnificent Mile was glittering under the light of a thousand crystal chandeliers.

It was the annual Chicago Business and Shipping Guild Gala—an elite, black-tie gathering where the most powerful billionaires, politicians, and syndicate leaders of the Midwest gathered to negotiate alliances and display their immense wealth.

In the past, I would have been locked away in a dark room, or forced to wear heavy silicone prosthetics and thick glasses while standing silently in the background of some minor family gathering.

Tonight, however, the heavy oak doors of the grand ballroom swung open, and all eyes turned toward the entrance in absolute, breathless silence.

I walked down the sweeping marble staircase on Adrian Vitali’s arm, wearing a custom-tailored, floor-length midnight-blue velvet evening gown that shimmered with subtle silver thread, my hair styled in elegant waves framing my unblemished face.

No silicone.

No thick glasses.

No disguises.

Just my natural, emerald-green eyes meeting the gaze of Chicago’s high society with calm, unyielding confidence.

Whispers rippled through the crowd like a wave across the water.

“Is that… is that Adrian Vitali’s new wife?” someone murmured from the front row.

“I thought she was supposed to be scarred and hideously ugly… Who is she?” another gasped, staring in open admiration.

Adrian didn’t even glance at the whispering crowd; his arm was wrapped securely around my waist, his broad shoulders and commanding presence broadcasting a silent, lethal warning to anyone in the room who dared show disrespect.

We walked down the remaining steps and stepped onto the polished parquet dance floor as the orchestra struck up a smooth, elegant waltz.

Adrian pulled me close, his hand resting firmly against the small of my back as we began to glide across the floor in perfect synchronization.

“You’re taking everyone’s breath away, Mrs. Vitali,” Adrian whispered against my ear, a warm, genuine smile touching his lips.

“Good,” I replied, looking up into his emerald eyes with a quiet, confident smirk. “It’s about time Chicago learned how to look at me without a mask in the way.”

As we danced beneath the glittering chandeliers, several high-ranking syndicate leaders and powerful shipping magnates—men who had once bowed exclusively to Salvatore Barone—approached the edge of the dance floor, raising their champagne glasses in respectful, cautious toast toward us.

They weren’t laughing anymore.

They weren't whispering cruel jokes about crippled bosses or ugly brides.

They understood, with absolute clarity, that the Vitali empire had just absorbed the Barone syndicate, and that the woman standing beside Adrian wasn’t a helpless pawn—she was the true queen of the Chicago underworld.
