Chapter 7 - The Crumbling Empire: Seizing Meridian Logistics and the Cayman Accounts

Within two hours of Salvatore Barone’s arrest, the Barone Syndicate’s entire financial structure collapsed like a house of cards built on quicksand.

While federal agents dismantled the headquarters downtown, Adrian’s cyber-intelligence team executed the final phase of our financial strike, freezing every remaining asset, shell corporation, and commercial real estate deed registered under Meridian Logistics.

I stood beside Adrian in the grand study of the Lake Forest estate, watching the live financial news broadcasts on the wall-mounted monitors as reporters frantically tried to make sense of the sudden, catastrophic downfall of Chicago’s most powerful mafia family.

“The Barone family’s primary logistics hub on the south side of the city has been surrounded by local and federal authorities,” the news anchor reported breathlessly, flashing aerial footage of police cruisers blocking the massive warehouse gates. “Industry insiders are calling this the most coordinated financial takedown in the history of the Chicago underworld.”

I turned away from the screen, letting out a long, slow breath as the weight of ten years of fear, silicone masks, and hidden identities finally lifted from my shoulders.

Adrian wheeled himself across the room—though he no longer needed the chair, he still used it occasionally when lounging privately—and handed me a freshly poured cup of black coffee.

“It’s over, Elena,” Adrian said softly, his emerald-green gaze meeting mine. “Your father is behind bars, his syndicate has been divided among neutral parties, and your true face will never have to hide behind silicone again.”

I took the cup from his hand, our fingers brushing gently.

“For ten years, I thought I was nothing more than a decoy—a piece of damaged property meant to protect Celeste from the ugliness of our father’s world,” I confessed, looking down at the dark liquid in the cup. “I never imagined I’d be standing here as your wife, watching his entire empire burn to the ground.”

Adrian reached out, placing his warm hand under my chin and tilting my face up so I had no choice but to look into his eyes.

“You were never a decoy, Elena,” Adrian said, his voice deep and unwavering. “You were the strongest person in that family all along. Your father underestimated you, your sister underestimated you, and they paid for that arrogance with everything they owned.”

Before I could answer, a soft knock echoed at the study door, and Graham, Adrian’s head of security, stepped into the room with a polite bow of his head.

“Boss, Mrs. Vitali,” Graham reported smoothly. “Ruth Delaney has been safely transported from our medical safehouse to her new private residence on the estate grounds. Her memory-care specialists are already settled in, and her medical bills have been permanently transferred to a secure Vitali trust fund.”

Tears of pure relief welled up in my eyes once more, and I let out a shaky sigh.

“Thank you, Graham,” I whispered.

“You’re very welcome, ma'am,” Graham nodded respectfully before turning and slipping back out of the room, closing the door behind him.

Adrian looked down at me, a faint, teasing smile touching the corners of his mouth.

“Well, Mrs. Vitali,” Adrian said, holding out his hand. “Since our wedding reception was somewhat disrupted by poison and uninvited guests, would you care to accompany me to the private conservatory for breakfast? I believe we have a marriage to actually celebrate.”

I smiled back, placing my hand in his strong grip.

May you like

“I’d love nothing more, Mr. Vitali,” I replied.

Little did we know, however, that while Salvatore Barone was locked in a federal holding cell awaiting arraignment, someone from his inner circle had managed to escape the net—and they were planning a desperate, violent retaliation against us both.
