Chapter 6 - The Dawn of Vengeance: Salvatore Barone’s Desperate Morning Call

The morning sun over downtown Chicago broke through the heavy autumn clouds, casting a cold, gray light across the towering glass facade of the Barone Syndicate headquarters.

Inside the top-floor executive suite, Salvatore Barone sat at his massive mahogany desk, tapping his gold-plated fountain pen impatiently against an empty glass of scotch.

It was 7:00 AM.

By now, according to Celeste’s meticulous timeline, Adrian Vitali should have been dead from the tetrodotoxin hidden in the amaro bottle, and Elena should have been locked in a master bedroom waiting to be discovered with the murder weapon in her hand.

The ensuing scandal would have crippled the Vitali family’s shipping empire, allowing Salvatore to absorb their lakefront docks without firing a single shot in open war.

Instead, his secure private phone resting on the corner of the desk remained eerily silent.

Salvatore frowned, reaching out to check the screen, only for the phone to suddenly erupt with a shrill, piercing ring that made him jump.

He snatched the receiver up immediately, his voice sharp and demanding.

“Celeste? Report. Is it done?” Salvatore barked into the speaker.

There was a brief pause, followed not by his daughter’s voice, but by a deep, cold, and utterly terrifying laugh that sent a shudder straight down his spine.

“Good morning, Salvatore,” Adrian Vitali’s voice resonated through the line, smooth as silk yet laced with deadly poison.

Salvatore’s blood ran completely cold, the pen slipping from his fingers to clatter against the polished wood.

“Adrian…?” Salvatore stammered, gripping the edge of the desk so hard his knuckles turned white. “How… how are you answering this phone? Where is my daughter?”

“Your daughter is currently resting comfortably in a secure basement cell beneath my Lake Forest estate,” Adrian replied casually, as if discussing the weather. “As for myself, I am feeling remarkably healthy for a man who was supposedly paralyzed by an assassin’s bullet eleven months ago.”

Salvatore stood up so fast his leather chair crashed backward onto the floor.

“Paralyzed… you’re… you’re standing?” Salvatore choked out, the reality of the trap closing in around him with suffocating speed. “That sniper bullet… my men verified the hit!”

“Your men were incompetent, Salvatore, just like the daughter you sent to assassinate me last night,” Adrian said, his tone turning razor-sharp. “And speaking of family, I believe there is someone here who would like to have a brief conversation with you about the last ten years of her life.”

A second later, the line clicked, and my voice came through the receiver, clear, steady, and entirely free of the trembling fear I had been forced to fake for a decade.

“Good morning, Father,” I said calmly.

Salvatore froze, his breath catching in his throat as he recognized the voice he thought he had successfully silenced and manipulated behind a silicone mask.

“Elena…?” he whispered in disbelief. “You… you betrayed me? You gave yourself to a cripple?”

“Not a cripple, Father,” I replied softly, a cold smile touching my lips. “A husband. And by the time the stock market opens in ten minutes, you’re going to find out that your offshore accounts in the Caymans have been emptied, your Meridian Logistics front companies have been seized by federal authorities, and your entire syndicate has been legally dismantled.”

“You little bitch!” Salvatore roared into the phone, losing all composure as panic took over. “I’ll hunt you down! I’ll burn that estate to the ground! I’ll kill you with my own bare hands!”

“You don’t have an empire left to hunt anyone with, Salvatore,” Adrian’s voice cut back in over the line, final and absolute. “Federal agents are currently walking through the front doors of your headquarters with arrest warrants for tax evasion, embezzlement, and conspiracy. Goodbye, old friend.”

The line went dead with a sharp click.

Salvatore stood alone in his grand office, staring at the dead phone in his hand as the heavy double doors of his suite suddenly blew open with a violent crash.

Half a dozen federal marshals, backed by Adrian Vitali’s elite security enforcers, poured into the room with weapons drawn.

“Salvatore Barone,” the lead agent announced, snapping steel handcuffs onto his wrists before he could reach for the golden gun hidden in his desk drawer. “You are under arrest.”
