Chapter 5 - The Drive Home to Three Innocent Boys

The drive back to the house on Maple Street was the longest, most agonizing forty minutes of Clara’s life.

James drove in total silence, his knuckles white on the steering wheel, his eyes fixed on the wet asphalt ahead.

In the back seat, secured safely in her brand-new infant car seat—a seat James had apparently purchased weeks ago and kept hidden in the trunk of his sedan, waiting for this exact day—the newborn slept peacefully.

When James pulled into the driveway, the familiar two-story colonial house looked entirely different.

It looked like a trap.

Through the front living room window, Clara could see the silhouettes of their three boys—Noah (nine), Liam (seven), and Ethan (four)—wrestling near the sofa, completely unaware that their entire universe had just been detonated.

Clara sat in the passenger seat for a long time after the engine was cut, staring at the front door.

“Clara,” James said quietly, reaching across the console to touch her wrist.

“What are we going to tell the boys?”

Clara pulled her arm away as if his touch burned her.

“You want to tell them something?” she asked, her voice lethal in its calm.

“You go right ahead, James. You tell our nine-year-old son that the baby sister he’s been praying for is actually the biological child of your dead college fiancée, engineered through a frozen embryo and delivered by a dying sister who hunted you down in secret.”

James flinched as if he had been slapped.

“We don't have to tell them that,” he whispered.

“We can tell them... we can tell them we adopted her. We can make up a story.”

“More lies?” Clara laughed bitterly, opening the car door and stepping out into the cold November air.

“That’s your solution to everything, isn't it? Just stack one lie on top of another until the whole house collapses.”

She walked toward the front porch, her boots crunching loudly against the gravel path.

Before she could even reach for the brass door handle, the front door swung wide open.

Noah bounded out first, followed closely by Liam and Ethan, all three of them shouting excitedly.

“Mom! Dad! Did you get her? Is she here? Can we see our sister?” Noah yelled, skidding to a halt on the porch mat, his eyes wide with eager anticipation.

Clara stopped at the bottom of the steps.

She looked at her three boys—noisy, chaotic, beautiful little hurricanes who loved their parents with an absolute, unquestioning purity.

They had no idea.

They had no idea that the dream they shared had been built on a foundation of deception.

James walked up behind her, carrying the pink-wrapped infant carrier in his arms, his face a mask of profound, desperate guilt.

“Boys,” James said, his voice shaking as he looked down at his sons.

“Meet your new baby sister.”

Noah stepped forward, peering into the carrier with a mixture of awe and wonder, gently poking a tiny pink finger toward the baby’s fist.

“She’s so small, Mom,” Noah whispered, looking up at Clara with a brilliant, gap-toothed smile.

“Aren't you happy? We finally got our sister.”

Clara looked down at her eldest son, her heart shattering all over again.

She didn't know how she was going to survive the night.

She didn't know how she was going to look at James across the dinner table ever again.
