Chapter 8 - The Morning Visitor and the Legal Document

The morning sun cast pale, watery beams across the kitchen table where Clara sat nursing a mug of black coffee, watching the newborn sleep peacefully in her carrier.

James had already retreated to his home office down the hall, looking as though he hadn't slept a wink in three days.

At 9:30 AM sharp, a sharp, authoritative knock echoed against the front door.

Clara frowned, setting her coffee mug down and walking slowly toward the entryway.

When she swung the door open, she found herself staring at a sharp-faced woman wearing a tailored charcoal suit, holding a heavy leather briefcase under her arm.

“Mrs. Miller?” the woman asked, her tone crisp and professional.

“Yes?” Clara replied warily.

“My name is Victoria Sterling. I’m the senior executor for the Vance family estate.”

Clara’s blood ran cold.

The name Vance dropped into the morning air like a lead weight.

“Elena Vance’s family,” Clara stated flatly, her hand tightening around the edge of the door.

“Yes, Mrs. Miller. And by extension, the legal representative overseeing Sarah Vance’s final directives regarding the custody and guardianship of the infant born yesterday morning.”

Victoria Sterling offered a cold, humorless smile, stepping uninvited across the threshold into the hallway.

“May I come in? We have very important legal matters to discuss regarding your husband... and his other family.”
