Chapter 9 - The Demands of the Vance Family

The kitchen on Maple Street suddenly felt suffocatingly small as Victoria Sterling settled herself at the kitchen table, opening her heavy leather briefcase with a crisp, snapping sound of brass latches.

Clara stood by the counter, her arms crossed tightly over her chest, while James hurried into the room from his office, his face pale and tense as he spotted the attorney.

“Victoria,” James said, his voice dropping into a dangerous register.

“What are you doing here? We had an agreement.”

“Good morning, James,” the attorney replied smoothly, not even bothering to look up as she pulled a thick sheaf of legal papers from the case.

“Agreements made under duress and grief are subject to re-evaluation, James. Especially when new financial contingencies arise concerning the Vance family trust.”

Clara glared between the two of them.

“What financial contingencies?” Clara demanded, stepping forward.

“What is she talking about, James?”

Victoria Sterling looked up, fixing Clara with a pair of cold, assessing gray eyes that seemed to strip away her dignity with a single glance.

“Mrs. Miller,” the attorney said, her tone dripping with patronizing pity.

“Surely James told you the whole truth. Not just the romantic campfire story about a dying engagement and a solemn vow.”

James lunged forward, slamming his palm down onto the table.

“Shut up, Victoria! Leave her out of this!”

“Leave her out of it?” Victoria laughed, a sharp, barking sound.

“James, she is legally the co-owner of this household. She has a right to know that the baby you are harboring isn't just a sentimental keepsake from your dead ex-fiancée.”

Clara’s heart pounded against her ribs.

“What does that mean?” she whispered.

Victoria slid a certified financial document across the table toward Clara.

“It means that Elena Vance left behind a twenty-million-dollar trust fund tied directly to the birth of her biological child—a trust designed to provide generational wealth and security.”

The numbers on the paper blurred before Clara’s eyes.

“Twenty million dollars?” Clara gasped.

“Yes,” Victoria nodded smugly.

“And according to the original terms drafted by our firm fourteen years ago, if James attempted to claim guardianship without the explicit, notarized consent of the Vance family patriarch, the entire fund reverts directly to our corporate charity foundation.”

Victoria leaned forward, resting her elbows on the table.

“In plain English, Mrs. Miller? Your husband didn't just inherit a baby yesterday. He inherited a twenty-million-dollar legal war. And the Vance family is here to take our child back.”
