Chapter 12 - The War Room at Lake Forest

The grand study of the Lake Forest manor had transformed into a fortress command center by the time noon arrived.

Architectural blueprints, satellite surveillance photographs, and encrypted radio monitors covered the massive mahogany conference table beneath the dim chandelier.

Five of Cole’s most trusted captains stood around the perimeter, their faces weathered by decades of syndicate survival, their voices kept to disciplined murmurs.

Outside, private security patrols with German shepherds walked the perimeter fence line, while tactical snipers maintained continuous surveillance over the private access roads.

Sarah stood near the large bay window, wrapped in a heavy cashmere sweater, sipping hot black tea as she studied the illuminated aerial maps of the South Side docks.

The vocal cord swelling had completely receded, leaving her voice with a low, commanding resonance that caught the attention of every veteran soldier in the room.

Dominic Rossi believes he holds the upper hand because he is holed up inside the old Calumet shipping terminal, Cole announced, tracing a heavy finger across the blue structural schematics.

He knows we cannot hit him from the main highway without triggering a full tactical response from the compromised precincts he has in his pocket.

He is waiting for nightfall, assuming we will either negotiate for terms or launch a reckless frontal assault that his heavy machine guns can chew to pieces.

One of the older captains, a silver-haired enforcer named Lorenzo who had served Cole’s father thirty years prior, shook his head in grim contemplation.

The Calumet facility has three-foot reinforced concrete walls and blast-proof cargo doors, Boss, Lorenzo pointed out, tapping a photograph of the loading docks.

If we push through the main gate, we lose half our vanguard before we even cross the tarmac.

It is an execution trap designed specifically to bait you into an emotional charge after the ambush on the bridge.

A quiet voice cut through the heavy tactical debate from the window.

You do not have to touch the main gate, Sarah said, turning around to face the table of hardened syndicate leaders.

Every eye in the room shifted toward her, some with subtle skepticism, others with quiet respect after word of her composure on the bridge had spread through the ranks.

Cole did not interrupt her; he stepped back from the head of the table, yielding the floor to his wife with absolute faith.

Explain it to them, Sarah, Cole encouraged softly.

Three years ago, before I ever met Cole, my design firm was contracted by the Chicago Port Logistics Board to draft structural retrofits for that exact terminal, Sarah explained, stepping up to the blueprints.

The building was originally an industrial grain elevator built in nineteen forty-two before it was converted into a cold-storage transit hub.

Because of the heavy dust combustion risks associated with grain storage, the city mandated two subterranean ventilation shafts that run beneath the railway spur directly into the boiler sub-basement.

She pulled a fountain pen from the desk caddy and drew a sharp, confident line from the abandoned railway siding straight beneath the concrete floor of the main warehouse.

Rossi’s security will be focused entirely on the vehicle ramps and the riverfront dock slips, Sarah continued, looking directly into Lorenzo’s skeptical eyes.

These utility conduits are unmonitored because the city sealed them with cast-iron grates twelve years ago, but the brickwork around the emergency bypass valves is brittle lime mortar.

Two men with pneumatic spreaders can breach that subterranean chamber in under four minutes without making enough noise to trigger a decibel sensor.

Silence descended over the war room as Cole’s captains leaned over the blueprints, realizing the absolute tactical brilliance of the intelligence before them.

Lorenzo stared at the marked route, slowly lifting his head to look at Sarah with newfound reverence.

She just gave us the backdoor key to Rossi’s throne room, Lorenzo muttered, a grim, admiring smile touching his wrinkled lips.

Cole walked behind Sarah, resting his hands gently on her shoulders, the pride radiating from his presence undeniable to every man in the room.

Dominic Rossi thought he was dealing with an ordinary socialite he could kidnap to break my empire, Cole said, his voice ringing with cold, absolute authority.

He did not realize that the woman who shares my name has a sharper tactical mind than half the capos sitting on the West Side commission.

We move at midnight through the rail spur, Cole ordered, looking at Dante and Lorenzo.

Take eight tactical operators, leave the heavy convoys behind, and deploy through the ventilation conduits Sarah mapped.

We cut Rossi’s communications first, we dismantle his private security detail from the inside out, and we leave him nowhere to run.

What about the crooked city officials protecting his perimeter? Dante asked, checking the slide on his tactical sidearm.

By ten o’clock tonight, Derek Vaughn’s signed federal deposition will hit the inbox of the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, Cole answered with a cold smirk.

Those compromised deputies will be too busy shredding their own files and running for their private lives to answer Dominic Rossi’s phone calls.

Tonight, the Rossi syndicate ceases to exist in the city of Chicago.
