Chapter 5 - The Ride Home in the Dark

Cole turned away from the cowering owner and walked back to where I was slowly pushing myself up from the edge of the mat, my breathing finally stabilizing.

He knelt beside me once more, his large hands resting gently on my shoulders, checking me over with a tenderness that stood in jarring, beautiful contrast to the absolute brutality he had just dispensed.

Can you stand now, Sarah, he asked, his voice softening into the intimate warmth reserved exclusively for me.

My throat still burned, but the dizziness had begun to recede, replaced by the familiar, grounding anchor of his presence.

I can walk, I whispered, leaning my weight against his chest as he helped me up to my feet with effortless strength.

We walked side by side toward the exit doors, leaving the silent, paralyzed gymnasium behind us without looking back once.

As we stepped out into the crisp, biting Chicago night air, the heavy glass doors swung shut behind us, cutting off the smell of sweat and disinfectant.

The two black Cadillac Escalades were idling quietly at the curb, their exhaust forming thin plumes of white vapor in the autumn chill.

The rear door of the lead vehicle swung open instantly upon our approach, a suited operative standing ready with an umbrella even though the sky was clear and full of bright, glittering stars.

Cole guided me gently into the warm, leather-scented interior of the SUV, climbing in right beside me and pulling the heavy armored door shut.

The partition between the passenger cabin and the driver's seat remained closed, giving us complete, absolute privacy as the vehicle glided silently away from Apex Grappling and merged into the shimmering stream of city traffic.

Cole reached into the center console, retrieving a small crystal bottle of chilled spring water and unscrewing the cap before handing it to me.

Drink slowly, he murmured, his thumb gently brushing against my bruised jawline where Derek's reckless forearm had left its mark.

I took a small sip, the cool water soothing my raw throat and bringing a welcome wave of relief to my aching body.

You did not have to step onto the mat yourself, you know, I said softly, looking up into his dark, intense eyes as the neon lights of downtown Chicago painted patterns across the window glass.

He let out a low, quiet sigh, wrapping his arm around my shoulders and pulling me closer against his solid frame.

Nobody touches my wife, Sarah, Cole replied, his voice carrying an absolute, unshakeable finality that brooked no argument.

Nobody chokes you, nobody disrespects you, and nobody walks away thinking the Moretti name is something they can test in a public gym.

I rested my head against his chest, listening to the steady, rhythmic beating of his heart as the SUV carried us through the dark, sprawling streets of our city.

Derek Vaughn would wake up in a hospital bed hours later, broken, humiliated, and facing a sudden, mysterious financial ruin that would force his family to pack up and leave Illinois before the end of the week.

The gym would remain closed for six months, serving as a silent, permanent monument to the cost of arrogance in a city ruled by shadows.

And back home in our sprawling estate overlooking the lake, the world would return to its quiet, orderly rhythm, guarded by a man who wore expensive suits by day and controlled the underworld by night.
