Chapter 3 - The Quiet Arrival

Cole looked past my outstretched hand, his expression smoothing into a mask of terrifying serenity that signaled the absolute end of any peaceful resolution.

He removed his dress shoes, slipping his feet free of the leather and stepping barefoot onto the blue wrestling mat as though walking onto a battlefield he had already conquered in his mind.

Just as his bare feet made contact with the vinyl flooring, the exterior Chicago night was suddenly sliced open by sweeping beams of intense light.

Headlights washed violently across the gym's wide glass windows, casting long, writhing shadows across the training equipment and the pale faces of the students.

One massive black Cadillac Escalade pulled up directly against the curb, blocking the entrance doors.

A second identical SUV slid silently in behind it, cutting its engine with clinical precision.

The heavy front doors of Apex Grappling swung open, and three large men in impeccably tailored dark suits stepped out of the Chicago chill with synchronized grace.

The lead operative reached for the gym door handle, his hand resting casually inside his jacket, but he froze dead in his tracks the exact moment he spotted Cole standing barefoot on the wrestling mat.

Cole raised his right hand just an inch and gave a tiny, almost imperceptible shake of his head.

The giant in the suit immediately stepped back outside, pulling the heavy glass door shut without a single word spoken.

Derek frowned, his arrogant bravado faltering for a split second as he registered the sudden influx of heavily built men lurking outside.

Friends of yours, downtown business associates stopping by to drop off paperwork? Derek mocked nervously, trying to laugh off the sudden chill in the room.

Something like that, Cole replied, his voice dropping an octave as he rolled his shoulders in a slow, fluid motion.

An older student standing near the back wall by the punching bags suddenly went completely pale, his color draining as though all his blood had been instantly vacuumed out.

Derek, whispered the veteran student, his voice trembling so violently that the words barely carried across the mat.

Maybe you should stop right now and apologize.

Derek glanced sideways at his friend, his smirk twitching with irritation.

Are you insane, the guy just showed up with his little entourage of accountants and bodyguards to try and scare me, Derek scoffed, refusing to back down from his fragile ego.

The older student swallowed hard, his throat bobbing frantically as his knees began to knock together.

You do not understand, the student whispered, his eyes wide with unadulterated terror as he stared at Cole's unblinking gaze.

That is Cole Moretti.

The name hit the gymnasium floor like an unexploded bomb.

Faces across the room drained of color in rapid succession.

The gym owner, sitting at the front desk counting membership fees, dropped his clipboard and went instantly white as a ghost.

The whispers rippled through the ranks of students like wildfire, transforming from confused murmurs into paralyzed silence.

Derek Vaughn, however, standing in the center of the mat, had been too busy flexing his biceps to hear the whispered revelation or understand the cultural weight of the surname Moretti.

He was still operating under the comforting delusion that he was about to teach some clueless, wealthy civilian a harsh lesson about real fighting.

He had no earthly idea why those black SUVs were idling outside with blacked-out windows.

He had no comprehension of why grown men who lived for violence had suddenly stopped breathing when Cole stepped into the room.

And he had absolute, catastrophic ignorance of the fact that the woman he had just choked into unconsciousness was the legally wedded wife of the most feared and untouchable crime lord in the entire Midwest.

Derek shifted his weight forward, raising his hands into his signature striking stance.

May you like

He reached out with his left hand, aiming a disrespectful, open-palmed shove toward Cole's neck.

And my husband finally moved.
