Chapter 3 - The Price of Clean Hands

When Elena pushed through the kitchen doors, the entire staff was waiting in frozen anticipation.

Chef Gerard had his chef’s knife planted point-down into the butcher block.

Charles Vance was pacing beside the order wheel, gnawing on his thumbnail until it bled.

""Did he leave?"" Charles demanded, lunging toward her the second she crossed the rubber threshold.

""Did he threaten a lawsuit?""

""He is waiting for dinner,"" Elena said calmly, setting the water carafe on the stainless pass.

Gerard's head snapped up.

""What does that mean, he's waiting? I cooked him the finest veal reduction in this hemisphere!""

""He said the stock is sour,"" Elena replied, looking directly into Gerard's bloodshot eyes.

""He knows the walk-in compressor died at ten this morning.""

Gerard turned the color of raw pork.

The line cooks looked down at their cutting boards, terrified to witness their master’s humiliation.

""You dare speak to me about stock?"" Gerard roared, stepping toward Elena with his fist clenched.

""You wash dishes, you little guttersnipe!""

""Step back, Gerard,"" Charles commanded weakly, though his own face was drenched in panic.

""What did he ask for, Elena?""

""He asked for simple food,"" Elena said.

""And he told me that if anyone else touches the plate, he walks out and pulls the restaurant's credit line.""

Charles swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing violently.

""Then cook it,"" Charles ordered, waving his hands frantically toward the pantry.

""Give her whatever she wants!""

Elena did not hesitate.

She tied a clean white kitchen towel around her waist over her service apron.

She bypassed Gerard's copper saucepans entirely.

She took a loaf of day-old country sourdough from the baker's rack.

She sliced two thick slabs, brushing them lightly with raw garlic and cold-pressed olive oil from the bottom shelf.

She set a heavy cast-iron skillet over a medium flame, toasting the bread until the crust charred just enough to release a smoky sweetness.

In a small enamel pot, she heated clear chicken broth that had been simmered purely with leeks, carrots, and sea salt.

No cream.

No synthetic truffle oils.

No heavy reductions designed to trick a spoiled palate.

She ladled the golden broth into a plain ceramic bowl, placed the toasted garlic bread on a side plate, and picked up the tray.

Gerard sneered as she walked past him.

""You're serving peasant slop to a billionaire,"" the chef muttered.

""He will have you arrested before dessert.""

Elena walked back into Suite A without knocking.

Adrien Vale sat precisely as she had left him, his hands resting flat on the mahogany table.

She set the broth and the charred bread before him in silence.

She did not offer a rehearsed speech about origin or culinary philosophy.

Vale looked down at the bowl.

The clear steam rose between them, carrying the pure aroma of roast fowl and roasted garlic.

He picked up the silver spoon.

Elena watched his throat move as he swallowed the first mouthful of broth.

For a moment, Vale closed his eyes.

A deep, shuddering breath escaped his chest, relaxing shoulders that looked as though they had carried a concrete bridge for years.

He broke off a corner of the garlic bread and dipped it into the soup.

He ate every single crumb.

He drank every drop of the broth until the bottom of the ceramic bowl was clean.

When he finished, he set the spoon down with a soft, deliberate click.

""My grandmother made this bread,"" he whispered, speaking to the empty air in front of him.

""In the valley, before the companies came and bought the land for copper.""

""My mother made it the same way,"" Elena said softly.

Adrien reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a heavy black leather checkbook.

He uncapped a gold fountain pen and wrote with swift, vicious strokes.

He tore the check from the binding and folded it twice.

Then, he pulled out a matte-black business card engraved with a single embossed phone number and no name.

He slid both across the white tablecloth toward her.

""The check is for twenty-five thousand dollars,"" Adrien said, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper.

Elena gasped, her hand flying to her throat as the room seemed to spin around her.

""I...

I cannot take this,"" she stammered, thinking instantly of Mateo’s medical bill.

""You will take it,"" Vale countered, rising to his full height.

""Because five thousand of it covers your brother’s hospital bill, and the rest is a retainer.""

Elena froze, the blood draining instantly from her face.

""How do you know about my brother?""

Adrien leaned in close, his cold breath brushing against her temple.

""Because nobody steps in front of me unless they are terrified of something far worse than Adrien Vale.""

""Be at the penthouse of Vale Tower tonight at midnight.""

""Do not tell your manager.""

May you like

""Do not go home first.""

""If you are not at my door when the clock strikes twelve, your brother will not survive until morning.""
