Chapter 4 - The Midnight Ledger

The rain began to fall in heavy, greasy sheets across the city by eleven o'clock.

Elena stood on the pavement outside The Grand Meridian, clutching her worn canvas tote bag against her ribs.

Inside the bag lay the folded check for twenty-five thousand dollars and the matte-black card.

Her phone vibrated in her pocket.

It was a text message from Mrs.

Flores, the elderly widow who lived next door to their cramped apartment in District 4.

Mateo had another coughing fit ten minutes ago.

His lips are slightly gray.

I gave him his inhaler.

Hurry home, child.

Elena bit her lower lip until she tasted blood.

Every protective instinct in her body screamed at her to catch the downtown subway and run to Mateo's bedside.

She could take the check, cash it at the twenty-four-hour check-cashing depot on 8th Avenue, and pay St.

Jude's tomorrow morning.

She didn't have to walk into the lion’s den at Vale Tower.

Then she remembered the icy certainty in Adrien Vale's gray eyes.

If you are not at my door when the clock strikes twelve, your brother will not survive until morning.

A man who could dismantle a restaurant with a whisper could cancel a hospital reservation with a single keystroke.

She turned away from the subway entrance and hailed a yellow taxi, handing the driver a crumpled twenty-dollar bill.

""Vale Tower,"" she said, her voice shaking slightly against the cold.

""Corner of 5th and Horizon.""

The tower rose seventy stories into the low, weeping clouds, a monolithic pillar of black steel and tinted glass.

The ground-floor lobby was larger than a cathedral, paved in dark Italian marble that reflected the security lights.

Two guards in tailored black uniforms intercepted Elena the second she pushed through the revolving doors.

""Service entrance is in the alley, miss,"" the taller guard said, reaching for his utility belt.

Elena didn't speak.

She pulled the matte-black card from her bag and held it flat between two fingers.

The guard's eyes widened when he saw the embossed silver cipher on the card.

He immediately took a step backward, tapping his earpiece with a trembling finger.

""Clearance Code Alpha,"" the guard whispered into his microphone.

""Private elevator three is unlocked for the guest.""

The elevator moved with sickening speed, ascending sixty floors without a single vibration.

When the brass doors slid open, Elena found herself inside a penthouse that looked less like a home and more like an armed fortress.

Floor-to-ceiling windows looked out over the glittering, rain-slicked skyline of the metropolis.

There were no soft rugs, no family portraits, no warm lamps.

The only light came from a massive bank of computer monitors displaying live market indices and encrypted security feeds.

Adrien Vale stood by the window, holding a glass of amber liquid that he was not drinking.

He had removed his suit jacket, wearing only a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms.

Along his left wrist, Elena noticed a thick, jagged burn scar running up beneath his cuff.

""You are four minutes early,"" Adrien said without turning around.

""I like people who understand the value of a deadline.""

""Where is my brother?"" Elena demanded, taking three aggressive steps into the penthouse.

Adrien turned around slowly.

He set the untouched glass down on a glass desk that held a small chemical testing kit with glass vials.

""Mateo is currently in an ambulance,"" Adrien said calmly.

Elena lunged forward, her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird.

""What did you do to him?""

""Calm yourself,"" Adrien ordered, his voice commanding absolute authority.

""He is being transferred from the municipal clinic to the private pediatric intensive care unit at St.

Jude.""

""Dr.

Kaufman, the chief of pediatric cardiac surgery, is meeting him at the loading bay.""

""I paid the full three-hundred-thousand-dollar procedure deposit twenty minutes ago.""

Elena stopped as if she had been hit by a physical blow.

Her knees buckled, and she had to catch the edge of the glass desk to keep from falling.

""Why?"" she whispered, tears finally spilling over her eyelashes.

""You don't know me.""

""You don't care about a dying boy from District 4.""

""I care about survival, Elena,"" Adrien said, stepping closer until he towered over her.

He picked up a small plastic dropper from the desk and held it under the light.

""For the past four months, someone in my inner circle has been trying to murder me.""

Elena blinked away her tears, staring at the chemical dropper.

""Murder you?""

""Thallium,"" Adrien said, his tone devoid of fear, filled only with cold fury.

""A tasteless, odorless heavy metal that mimics chronic fatigue and heart failure.""

""They have been introducing it into my private meals, my water supplies, and my vintage wines in microscopic doses.""

""My private chef of six years vanished two weeks ago.""

""My board of directors, led by my uncle Julian Vale, has already prepared the paperwork to declare me medically incapacitated.""

Elena looked from the chemical dropper to the untouched glass on his desk.

""You couldn't eat at The Grand Meridian tonight because you thought the food was poisoned,"" she realized out loud.

""I know it was,"" Adrien replied coldly.

""The sour stock was an amateur kitchen accident, but the wine Julian brought to my table had an elevated chemical signature.""

""I cannot eat anything prepared by the high-society kitchens of this city.""

""I need someone whose hands are clean of corporate money.""

""Someone who knows the taste of ash and hunger.""

""Someone who cannot be bought by my uncle.""

Adrien leaned forward, placing a thick leather-bound contract onto the desk before her.

""You will move into this estate tomorrow morning.""

May you like

""You will inspect every morsel of food and drop of water that enters my body.""

""And when we appear in public, you will stand beside me as my fiancée.""
