Chapter 5 - The Viper’s Banquet

Elena stared down at the crisp pages of the non-disclosure agreement and employment contract.
""Your fiancée?"" she echoed, her voice cracking under the absurdity of the words.
""Look at me, Mr.
Vale.""
""I wear uniform polyester and scrub grease for fourteen dollars an hour.""
""Your world would chew me up and spit me out before the appetizers are served.""
""That is precisely why they will believe it,"" Adrien said, his eyes narrowing into cold calculation.
""My uncle expects me to marry Victoria Sterling, the daughter of the shipping conglomerate that controls the eastern seaboard.""
""Victoria has been sitting on my executive board for two years, whispering poison into my ear while reporting my health metrics to Julian.""
""If I announce an engagement to a woman outside their social circle, it shatters their timetable.""
""It forces Julian to move prematurely before his legal trap is fully sprung.""
Elena looked down at the pen resting on the desk.
""And if I refuse?""
""If you refuse, you walk out that door with the twenty-five thousand dollars I gave you,"" Adrien replied without hesitation.
""You pay Mateo's initial clinic deposit, and you hope that the public hospital doesn't cancel his surgery when the complications start.""
""Or you sign this contract, Mateo receives the finest cardiac care in North America, and you earn five million dollars when this war is over.""
Elena did not need to deliberate.
For fourteen years, she had fought the world with bare knuckles to keep her little brother breathing.
She would dance with the devil himself if it guaranteed Mateo’s heart kept beating.
She took the fountain pen and signed her name on the bottom of every page.
The following evening, the city seemed to hold its breath beneath a canopy of freezing rain.
The annual Vale Capital Winter Gala was hosted in the grand ballroom of the Plaza Athenee.
Four hundred of the country's wealthiest financiers, politicians, and socialites filled the room with champagne laughter.
The brass doors swung open, and the room went completely still.
Adrien Vale walked through the entrance, immaculate in a bespoke midnight-blue tuxedo.
On his arm walked Elena Morales.
She wore a floor-length emerald silk gown tailored specifically for her frame by Vale’s private seamstress in under six hours.
Her dark hair was swept into an intricate updo secured by diamond pins that sparkled beneath the chandeliers.
Her hands were smooth, manicured, and free of bleach scent for the first time in ten years.
Yet beneath the silk, her spine remained as rigid as cold iron.
""Keep your head up,"" Adrien whispered without moving his lips as they descended the marble steps.
""They are looking for fear.""
""Give them nothing.""
""I am not afraid of people who wear jewelry to dinner,"" Elena whispered back, her eyes scanning the crowd with sharp focus.
A tall, silver-haired man broke away from the center cluster of executives and walked toward them with an expansive smile.
It was Julian Vale.
Beside him walked Victoria Sterling, wearing an ice-blue dress that looked as cold as her diamond choker.
""Adrien, my dear boy!"" Julian bellowed, opening his arms as if to embrace his nephew.
""We heard rumors that you were bedridden with exhaustion this afternoon.""
""You look remarkably alive.""
""Disappointed, Uncle?"" Adrien replied, his tone dripping with quiet disdain.
Julian's smile did not slip, but his cold blue eyes dropped instantly to Elena.
""And who is this charming young lady?"" Julian asked, raising an eyebrow.
""I don't recall seeing her name on the executive guest ledger.""
""This is Elena Morales,"" Adrien announced, his voice carrying clearly across the silent circle of spectators.
""My fiancée.""
Victoria Sterling choked on her champagne, her pale face flushing a deep, furious crimson.
""Your fiancée?"" Victoria gasped, stepping forward with venom in her eyes.
""Adrien, this is absurd.""
""She was bussing tables at The Grand Meridian yesterday afternoon!""
Elena stepped forward before Adrien could speak, tilting her chin up to meet Victoria’s glare.
""And yesterday afternoon, Miss Sterling, you were celebrating the drop in Vale Capital’s quarterly stock value,"" Elena said smoothly.
""I may have cleaned tables, but at least my hands don't smell like corporate betrayal.""
A murmur of shock rippled through the gathering crowd.
Victoria's jaw dropped, her fingers trembling against her crystal champagne flute.
A server approached the tense quartet carrying a silver tray with four glasses of vintage vintage champagne.
Julian picked up two flutes, smiling with renewed confidence.
""A toast, then,"" Julian said, offering one glass directly to Adrien.
""To unexpected alliances.""
Elena's eyes darted down to the glass Julian had chosen for Adrien.
The surface of the champagne was sparkling, but around the rim of the crystal, a faint oily sheen clung to the glass.
Elena did not wait.
May you like
She reached out, intercepted the glass from Julian's hand, and deliberately let it drop to the polished marble floor.
The crystal shattered with an explosive crack that silenced the entire ballroom.
