Chapter 10 - A Mother's Vow Rewarded

By late afternoon, the estate had begun to breathe again.

The demolition crew had already arrived, systematically stripping Chloe’s belongings and the modern furniture from the master suite, loading everything into heavy industrial dumpsters parked outside the gates.

The air in the house felt lighter, as if a thick, toxic fog had finally burned away under the California sun.

In the family kitchen, the aroma of homemade chicken noodle soup and warm rosemary bread filled the high ceilings.

It was the first time in nearly a year that the kitchen had smelled like a home rather than a staged architectural showroom.

Valeria and Sofia were sitting at the breakfast counter, their cheeks flushed with healthy color, happily slurping warm broth from ceramic bowls.

Marisol stood near the stove, wearing a clean white apron, smiling gently as Sofia asked for another warm bread roll.

I stood in the doorway for a long moment, simply watching them.

In the midst of all the millions I had accumulated in my bank accounts, this simple, quiet scene was the only thing of actual value in my universe.

I walked into the kitchen and sat down on the barstool next to Valeria.

She immediately leaned her head against my arm, resting her small hand over mine.

“How is the soup, girls?” I asked softly.

“It’s Marisol’s special recipe,” Valeria said, smiling up at me.

“Mommy used to help her make it when we were sick.”

My heart swelled with a bittersweet warmth.

“I remember,” I murmured.

I looked across the island counter at Marisol.

She was carefully slicing another piece of bread, her posture humble and unassuming, as if she hadn’t just saved my family from an unimaginable catastrophe.

“Marisol,” I said, clearing my throat.

She paused, resting the bread knife on the cutting board, wiping her hands on a linen cloth.

“Yes, Mr. Vance? Would you like a bowl of soup, sir?”

“No, thank you, Marisol. I’d like you to sit down with us for a moment.”

Marisol hesitated, glancing around the kitchen.

“Mr. Vance, it’s not proper for the staff to—”

“You are not staff anymore, Marisol,” I interrupted, my voice firm yet filled with profound tenderness.

Marisol’s eyes widened with sudden fear, her hands trembling as she gripped the edge of the counter.

“Sir? Are you... are you letting me go?”

Valeria gasped, dropping her spoon, and grabbed my arm in panic.

“Daddy, no! Please don’t fire Marisol! She protected us!”

Sofia started to cry, slipping off her barstool to run around the counter and wrap her little arms around Marisol’s waist.

“Please, Daddy! Don’t send Marisol away!”

I quickly stood up and walked around the counter, dropping to one knee beside Sofia and Marisol.

“Nobody is being sent away, sweetheart,” I said, gently pulling Sofia against my side while looking up at Marisol’s terrified face.

“I phrased that horribly, Marisol. Forgive me.”

I reached into my suit pocket and pulled out a formal legal document bearing the gold seal of Vance Enterprises’ family trust division.

“Marisol, for five years, you have treated my daughters as if they were your own flesh and blood. You took abuse from a cruel woman because you refused to abandon my children when I was too blind to protect them myself.”

I unfolded the document and placed it on the counter.

“Effective this afternoon, your position as a housekeeper is terminated.”

Marisol held her breath, listening intently.

“In its place, I am appointing you as the permanent director of the Vance Family Household and legal co-guardian of Valeria and Sofia in the event of my death.”

Marisol gasped, her hands flying to her mouth.

“Mr. Vance... I... I can't accept that... I am just a simple woman...”

“You are the woman who kept a sacred promise to my late wife,” I said, my voice thick with emotion.

“Along with this role comes a permanent annual salary of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars, full health coverage, and an independent five-million-dollar irrevocable trust fund established in your name.”

Marisol began to weep uncontrollably, shaking her head in utter disbelief.

“Mr. Vance, this is too much... I did not do this for money... I did it because I love these girls!”

“I know you did,” I smiled, standing up and placing a comforting hand on her shoulder.

“That is precisely why you deserve every single penny of it. The trust fund ensures that no one can ever threaten your livelihood or your independence ever again.”

Valeria walked over and hugged Marisol from the other side, burying her face into the woman’s apron.

“You’re staying with us forever, Marisol?” Valeria asked, her voice trembling with hope.

Marisol knelt down, wrapping her arms completely around both of my daughters, her tears wetting their hair.

“Forever, mi amor,” Marisol sobbed softly.

“I will never leave you.”

Watching the three of them hold each other in the warm kitchen light, I felt the final fragments of my shattered family begin to knit back together.

The battle inside my home was won.

The monster had been cast out, the innocent had been vindicated, and my daughters were finally safe in the arms of the people who truly loved them.

Suddenly, Hector’s figure appeared in the kitchen doorway, his expression grim and urgent.

He caught my eye and gave a subtle, sharp nod toward the private study down the hall.

I stepped away from the kitchen counter, quietly following Hector into the corridor.

“What is it, Hector?” I asked, shutting the hallway door behind us.

Hector looked around to ensure we were completely out of earshot.

“Boss, our contact at the County Jail just called. Chloe was processed thirty minutes ago.”

“And?”

“She didn't use her phone call to contact a criminal defense attorney,” Hector said, his voice dropping to a low, chilling whisper.

“She called Arthur Vance. Your estranged older brother.”

My blood ran cold.

Arthur.

The black sheep of the Vance dynasty, who had been disinherited by our father ten years ago and had sworn to take back the family empire by any means necessary.

Chloe hadn't just been working with Julian Sterling.

She had been planted inside my home by my own blood brother.
