Chapter 3 - The Breaking Point

Valeria and Sofia walked toward the recessed sitting area near the marble fireplace.

They weren’t doing anything destructive.

They weren’t running or yelling.

Sofia sat down on the low ottoman, gently resting the stuffed rabbit on her lap.

Valeria opened her book and sat beside her sister, instinctively leaning her shoulder against Sofia's.

Chloe took three measured steps toward them, her designer heels clicking against the hardwood like the cocking of a rifle.

“How many times have I explicitly told you two not to bring your trash into the formal living room?” Chloe’s voice cut through the quiet room like a serrated knife.

The girls’ reactions on the monitors made my stomach drop into a bottomless pit.

Neither girl looked confused.

Neither girl asked why.

They didn't gasp in surprise.

Valeria instantly slammed her book shut, her small body freezing in absolute, conditioned panic.

Sofia dropped her chin to her chest, her tiny shoulders curling inward as if trying to make herself invisible.

They had heard that exact tone, with that exact cruelty, many times before.

This wasn't a sudden outburst; it was a daily, systematic terror that occurred the moment I pulled out of the driveway.

“Answer me, Valeria,” Chloe demanded, standing directly over the nine-year-old child.

“I... we were just waiting for our tutor, Miss Chloe,” Valeria stammered, her voice shaking violently.

“The tutor doesn't arrive for another hour,” Chloe snapped.

“You belong in the play area or the basement. This room is for entertaining adults, not for harboring undisciplined orphans who don't know how to follow rules.”

Orphans.

The word echoed through the speakers of the security bunker, ringing in my ears with deafening cruelty.

My hands shook with a lethal mixture of heartbreak and rage.

“Look at this disgusting thing,” Chloe hissed, reaching down suddenly and snatching the stuffed rabbit from Sofia’s small hands.

“No! Please!” Sofia cried out, lunging forward with her tiny arms outstretched.

“Mommy gave me that! Please, Miss Chloe!”

Chloe didn't flinch.

She held the battered rabbit by its threadbare ear, dangling it just out of Sofia’s reach with an expression of pure, unadulterated disgust.

“Your mother is dead, Sofia,” Chloe said with chilling, deliberate cruelty.

“And this germ-infested rag belongs in an incinerator.”

Chloe walked over to the tall display shelving unit that stood eight feet high beside the fireplace.

She reached up onto the top shelf—far beyond the reach of a six-year-old child—and tossed the stuffed rabbit onto the dusty ledge.

“When your father isn’t here, I am the master of this house,” Chloe continued, turning back toward the girls.

“I make the rules. And rule number one is that you do not disobey me.”

Sofia collapsed onto the floor, weeping silently, her tiny hands covering her face.

Valeria scrambled off the ottoman, dropping to her knees beside her little sister, wrapping her arms completely around Sofia’s trembling frame.

Valeria looked up at Chloe.

In that nine-year-old girl’s eyes was a mixture of pure terror and fierce, desperate defiance.

“You’re mean,” Valeria whispered through her tears.

“We’re going to tell Daddy when he gets home. He’s going to make you leave!”

Chloe took two slow, predatory steps toward Valeria.

She knelt down, bringing her face inches from the little girl’s terrified features.

“You won’t tell your father anything,” Chloe said, her voice dropping to a sinister, quiet hiss.

“Because if you say one single word to him, I will make sure he leaves this house and never comes back.”

Valeria choked on a sob.

“He wouldn't leave us!”

“He already leaves you every single week, doesn't he?” Chloe sneered, driving the dagger deeper into the child’s broken heart.

“He can barely stand to look at you because you remind him of your dead mother. If you cause trouble, I’ll tell him you’re mentally unstable. He’ll ship you both to a facility where you will never see him again.”

In the monitoring bunker, my vision blurred with red.

The sheer psychological brutality being inflicted on my motherless daughters was happening inside the home I built to protect them.

I stood up so violently from the console that the heavy leather chair crashed backward onto the floor.

“Mr. Vance, wait!” Hector cried out, jumping to his feet.

“Let me get the security guards from the gate—”

“Nobody touches her but me,” I snarled, my voice barely human.

Before I could take two steps toward the reinforced door, the audio feed crackled.

Marisol had entered the living room.

She had heard the crying from the kitchen.

She stood in the grand archway, still wearing her simple navy apron, holding a clean dish towel in her hands.

She saw Sofia on the floor.

She saw Valeria trembling with terror.

And she saw Chloe Montgomery leaning over them like a demon.

Marisol didn't back down.

She didn't hesitate for a fraction of a second.

She threw the towel onto a side table and walked briskly across the silk rug, placing her entire body directly between Chloe and my two daughters.

“Step away from the children, Miss Chloe,” Marisol said, her voice trembling with righteous fury.

Chloe straightened up, her eyes flashing with pure arrogance.

“How dare you enter this room without being summoned? Get back to the kitchen and clean the grease off the stove, you useless peasant.”

“I will not clean anything while you abuse these babies,” Marisol said, standing as firm as an oak tree.

“They were sitting quietly. You took Sofia’s toy. You are terrorizing them because you know their father is not here to see what you truly are.”

Chloe’s face turned crimson with rage.

“I am the future lady of this house! You are an hourly servant! I will have you thrown in federal prison by noon!”

Sofia let out a loud, agonized wail from the floor behind Marisol.

“I just want my bunny... please, Marisol, get my bunny...”

Sofia took a desperate step forward from behind Marisol’s legs, reaching toward the high shelf.

Chloe reacted with instant, vicious aggression.

She reached out, grabbed Sofia’s small wrist, and twisted it with enough force to make the six-year-old shriek in pain.

“Shut up, you little brat!” Chloe screamed.

Marisol did not hesitate.

She lunged forward, grabbed Chloe’s arm with iron strength, and wrenched Chloe’s fingers off the little girl's wrist.

“Do not touch her!” Marisol roared, pushing Chloe backward onto the couch.

“If you lay one hand on these children again, God help me, I will end you!”

May you like

Inside the security bunker, my entire soul caught fire.

I kicked open the heavy monitoring door with an echoing crash and marched down the subterranean corridor, headed straight for the living room.
