Chapter 5 - The Unmasking and the Eviction

Hector placed the tablet on the low mahogany coffee table in the center of the room.

He tapped the screen twice.

The crystal-clear speakers of the device resonated through the high-ceilinged room.

Chloe’s own voice blasted through the silence with terrifying clarity.

“...Alexander is entirely consumed by his business deals and his dead wife’s ghost. He believes every single word I feed him...”

Chloe stopped mid-breath.

Her hands dropped to her sides.

The tablet continued playing:

“...Once Marisol is arrested, those two little brats won’t have anyone left to run to. I’ll convince Alexander that a strict boarding school in Switzerland is the only way to fix their behavioral issues... Julian, I’ve already copied the financial disclosure files from his safe...”

Every single word she had spoken to her secret lover and co-conspirator echoed through the living room like gunshots.

Then the tablet transitioned to the video feed from three minutes ago.

On the screen, in vibrant four-thousand-pixel definition, Chloe was seen snatching the stuffed rabbit from Sofia’s hands.

The screen showed Chloe twisting Sofia’s tiny wrist.

The audio captured Chloe’s sinister hiss: “Your mother is dead, Sofia. And this germ-infested rag belongs in an incinerator.”

The proof was absolute.

There were no excuses.

There was no spin.

There was no plausible deniability.

Chloe stood frozen in the middle of the room, looking down at her own crimes displayed in incontrovertible digital light.

All the elegance, all the high-society poise, all the calculated charm stripped away like cheap paint.

She looked small, pathetic, and thoroughly exposed.

I gently set Valeria and Sofia down on the couch behind Marisol.

“Marisol,” I said softly.

“Please take the girls out to the garden pool terrace. Get them some warm hot chocolate.”

“Yes, Mr. Vance,” Marisol nodded, wiping her tears.

She reached out, and both girls immediately took her hands, walking toward the terrace doors without casting a single backward glance at Chloe.

As Sofia walked past, she looked up at the high shelf where her stuffed rabbit lay trapped.

I stepped over, reached up with my tall frame, took Elena’s stuffed rabbit from the ledge, and placed it back into Sofia’s tiny hands.

“No one will ever take it from you again, baby,” I promised.

Sofia hugged the rabbit to her chest, buried her face in its worn fabric, and walked out into the sunlight with her sister.

The heavy glass terrace doors slid shut, sealing the living room into absolute silence.

It was just me, Chloe, and Hector.

Chloe swallowed hard, taking a desperate step backward until the back of her legs hit the edge of the fireplace hearth.

“Alexander... please... listen to me,” she whimpered, her voice cracking with terror.

“That... that wasn't what it sounded like... I was under so much stress... the wedding planning... taking care of two children who aren't mine... I was venting to a friend...”

“A friend?” I asked, my voice chillingly low as I took a single step toward her.

“Julian is your former business partner, isn't he? The one currently being investigated by the Securities and Exchange Commission for wire fraud?”

Chloe gasped, her eyes widening in pure shock.

“Did you really believe I became a billionaire by being stupid, Chloe?” I continued, standing over her like a storm cloud.

“I noticed the irregularities in my home office two weeks ago. I noticed the thumb drive access log on my private server. I allowed you to think I was a blind, grieving widower so you would walk directly into the snare.”

Chloe began to shake.

“Alexander, I love you! You know I love you!”

“You love my trust funds,” I said, stripping the heavy platinum-and-diamond engagement ring off my pinky finger where I had held it after taking it from the safe.

I reached out and grabbed Chloe’s left hand.

I didn't squeeze.

I didn't hurt her.

I simply slid the five-carat diamond ring off her finger with cold precision.

“You have exactly ten minutes to leave my property,” I stated, dropping the ring into my pocket like a piece of worthless gravel.

Chloe’s panic suddenly turned into desperate rage.

“You can’t just kick me out!” she screamed, her mask completely disintegrating into an ugly, spitting fury.

“We are legally betrothed! I’ve lived in this house for eight months! I have tenant rights! You have to evict me through the courts! If you throw me out on the street, I will sue you for everything you own! I will tell the press how you abuse your partners!”

I didn't even blink.

I turned to Hector.

“Hector, call District Attorney Vance—my brother. Tell him we are pressing immediate charges for felony child abuse, corporate espionage, and attempted grand larceny.”

I turned back to look Chloe dead in the eyes.

“You have nine minutes left. If your feet are still touching my property at the end of those nine minutes, you will not leave in an Uber. You will leave in the back of a Los Angeles County Sheriff's patrol car in handcuffs.”

Chloe stared at me, realizing with sudden, horrifying finality that she had lost everything.

Her calculated climb to Bel-Air royalty had just ended in total ruin.

She turned, choked back a venomous sob, and sprinted toward the master suite to gather her belongings.

I turned to Hector.

“Follow her. Ensure she takes nothing except the clothes on her back. If she touches a single piece of Elena’s jewelry or my documents, break her grip and call the deputies.”

“Understood, boss,” Hector replied with a grim, satisfied nod, marching down the hallway behind her.

I stood alone in the center of the silent living room.

I walked over to the antique console table beneath Elena’s oil portrait.

I picked up the framed photograph of Elena holding Valeria as a baby—the photograph Chloe had turned face-down.

I carefully wiped a speck of dust from the glass with my thumb.

I set the picture upright, perfectly aligned under the soft light.

May you like

“I’m sorry, Elena,” I whispered into the quiet room.

“I almost let a monster destroy what you gave your life to create. But never again.”
