Chapter 10 - The Mastermind Behind The Veil

The victory in Courtroom 4B sent shockwaves through the Rhode Island legal establishment, but the real mystery was only beginning to unfurl its darker layers.
Two hours after the hearing, Graham, Marcus, and I sat inside the private conference room of Ellison, Vance & Sterling on the forty-second floor of the Newport Financial Tower.
Outside the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, the coastal storm beat against the panes, mirroring the turbulence of the documents spread across the conference table.
Lily was asleep on a soft leather sofa in the corner of the office, wrapped in Graham’s wool overcoat, clutching the old black metal flash drive in her hand like a protective talisman.
Marcus dropped a thick, unredacted file onto the table with a heavy thud.
"We dug into Vanessa’s offshore routing logs from the Grand Cayman account, Graham," Marcus said, his voice unusually quiet and strained.
"There is a major problem."
Graham looked up from his legal tablet, his eyes narrowing.
"What kind of problem? The money was wired from Arthur’s estate, wasn't it?"
"Only half of it," Marcus answered grimly, turning the page toward us.
"The one point two million dollars that went to Evelyn Bennett came from Arthur’s stolen liquid accounts, yes."
"But the other three million dollars that funded Vanessa’s Newport socialite lifestyle over the past four years didn't come from your firm, and it didn't come from Arthur Bennett."
I leaned forward, my heart beating with sudden apprehension.
"Where did it come from, Marcus?"
Marcus pointed his finger at an encrypted financial entity named "Helios Maritime Holdings," registered in Zurich, Switzerland.
"Helios Maritime Holdings was the company that bought the private shipping lanes Arthur Bennett refused to sell before he was poisoned."
"Arthur spent his entire life keeping Newport’s deep-water docks out of corporate private equity hands."
"He believed coastal shipping belonged to local families, not foreign real estate cartels."
"And the majority shareholder of Helios Maritime Holdings is not an anonymous foreign investor."
Marcus slid a corporate registration document across the mahogany table.
At the top of the board of directors list was a name that made Graham’s entire body freeze into solid granite.
Julian Ellison.
Graham’s estranged older brother.
Julian was the black sheep of the Ellison dynasty, a high-stakes hedge fund predator who had been forced out of the family firm seven years ago following an insider trading scandal in New York.
The room went dead silent, save for the patter of the coastal rain against the glass.
"Julian funded her," Graham whispered, the words coming out like chips of dry ice.
"Vanessa wasn't acting alone."
"She didn't have the legal or financial sophistication to create these multi-tiered shell corporations on her own."
"Julian manufactured the entire scheme," Marcus confirmed, nodding heavily.
"Julian found Vanessa through the fertility broker nine years ago."
"He supplied the synthetic potassium through his contacts in the European pharmaceutical sector."
"He used Vanessa to liquidate Arthur Bennett’s deep-water shipping lanes so Helios could buy the Newport waterfront for pennies on the dollar."
"And the final phase of Julian’s plan was this wedding."
"Once Vanessa married you, Graham, Julian was going to use your firm’s unblemished reputation to launch a fifty-million-dollar coastal redevelopment bond that would have bankrupted Ellison, Vance & Sterling while Helios walked away with the real estate."
I stared at the paper, the sheer magnitude of the conspiracy taking my breath away.
This was never just a petty family rivalry between two sisters.
It was a calculated, predatory corporate assassination engineered by a brother who wanted to destroy Graham, using my father’s life and my daughter’s existence as disposable pawns on a board of greed.
Graham slowly stood up from the conference table.
His hands were steady, but the cold fury radiating from his eyes was unlike anything I had ever seen.
He walked over to the sofa where Lily lay sleeping peacefully, her small chest rising and falling in rhythmic innocence.
He gently pulled the wool coat higher over her shoulders, tucking it beneath her chin with infinite gentleness.
Then he turned back to Marcus and me, his voice low, measured, and absolute.
"Julian thinks he can hide behind Swiss privacy laws and offshore shell entities while he uses my family as collateral," Graham said softly.
"He thinks Arthur Bennett’s murder can be swept under a corporate settlement."
"Marcus, call the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York."
"Tell him that Ellison, Vance & Sterling is turning state's evidence on Helios Maritime Holdings tonight."
"Every financial ledger, every communication log, and every encrypted wire transfer Julian sent to Vanessa’s accounts will be delivered to the Federal Bureau of Investigation before sunrise."
Graham walked over to me, extending his hand.
I placed my hand in his, feeling the undeniable strength and certainty in his warm, steady fingers.
"Arthur Bennett gave Lily that flash drive because he trusted that truth would outlast the wolves, Claire," Graham said, looking deeply into my eyes.
"The wolves are gathered outside our gates."
May you like
"But they forgot one thing."
"A father who has just found his daughter will tear the world apart before he lets anyone harm her again."
