Chapter 6 - The Cold Walls Of The Holding Cell

The heavy steel sliding gate of the Newport County Detention Facility slammed shut with an ear-splitting clang.

The sound vibrated through the damp concrete walls and down the sterile hallway where fluorescent bulbs buzzed like angry hornets.

Vanessa sat on a rusted metal bench, her ruined lace wedding dress stained with grey grease from the police transport van.

Her mascara had bled down both cheeks in dark, jagged tracks, making her look like a manic carnival doll.

Across the holding area, behind a reinforced partition of frosted plexiglass, my mother Evelyn sat hunched over a stainless steel table.

Evelyn was still clutching the lapels of her fine peach silk shawl, but the elegance had vanished, replaced by the wild, hollow stare of a trapped animal.

"You told me that laboratory was paid off, Vanessa!" Evelyn screamed suddenly through the perforated metal intercom hole.

"You told me Arthur’s tissue samples were incinerated in the state crematorium three years ago!"

"You swore on your life there was no digital trace left in Switzerland!"

Vanessa did not lift her head from her bruised knees.

Her fingers, missing two expensive acrylic nails, dug viciously into the lace fabric over her thighs.

"Shut up, mother," Vanessa hissed through clenched, yellowing teeth.

"Just shut your pathetic mouth and let me think."

"Think about what?" Evelyn shrieked, slamming her palm against the steel table.

"The Rhode Island Attorney General is already downstairs!"

"Graham Ellison has frozen every offshore bank account tied to my social security number!"

"The police found the transfer logs from the Grand Cayman routing network on that child’s flash drive!"

"We are going to die in prison because of that little eight-year-old rat!"

At the mention of Lily, Vanessa’s head snapped upward with terrifying speed.

Her hazel eyes, once so polished and cold in high-society salons, were completely dilated with homicidal hatred.

"Arthur gave her that drive," Vanessa whispered, her voice trembling with venomous rage.

"The old man was smiling when he died in that hospital bed."

"I thought he was choking on his own saliva, but he was laughing at me."

"He knew that stupid stuffed animal had the cryptographic key inside its stuffing."

A heavy set of iron keys jingled outside the corridor door, breaking the sisters’ mutual condemnation.

A guard stepped aside, allowing a tall man in a charcoal designer suit to enter the consultation vestibule.

It was not Graham Ellison.

It was Bradley Shaw, the ruthless criminal defense attorney who had built a career keeping Rhode Island’s most corrupt oligarchs out of federal penitentiaries.

Bradley carried a heavy leather briefcase with gold latches, setting it down on the table with deliberate, heavy finality.

"Save your breath, ladies," Bradley said coldly, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses without offering either woman a shred of sympathy.

"I just came from a closed-door emergency conference with the Chief Judge of the Superior Court."

"Did Graham send you?" Evelyn asked desperately, pressing her withered face against the glass.

"Tell him it was all Vanessa’s idea!"

"Tell him I was coerced under duress! I am an old woman, Bradley!"

Bradley let out a short, cynical laugh that cut like broken glass.

"Graham Ellison is not paying my retainer, Evelyn."

"Your late husband’s trust had a trigger clause that automatically activated the moment an unnatural death was verified by foreign forensics."

"The trust paid a five-hundred-thousand-dollar emergency legal retainer to my firm four years ago, before Arthur even entered hospice."

"Arthur Bennett hired me to ensure you both receive the absolute maximum sentence allowed under federal racketeering laws."

Vanessa leaped to her feet, throwing herself against the bars of her cell.

"You work for my family’s trust, Shaw! That money is mine!" she screamed, her spit hitting the metal bars.

"The probate court reversed the estate execution two hours ago, Vanessa," Bradley replied smoothly, opening his folder to reveal a freshly stamped judicial order.

"You are not the executor; you never were."

"The court reinstated the 2019 testament signed by your father."

"Claire Bennett is now the sole trustee of the fourteen-million-dollar Bennett Coastal Shipping Empire."

"And Graham Ellison has just filed an emergency petition for parental acknowledgment and co-guardianship."

"Every dollar you spent on this wedding, every diamond on your neck, and every penny in your shell corporations has been seized by the United States Marshals."

Vanessa’s mouth worked soundlessly, like a fish pulled from deep water onto a scorching rock.

The reality of her total, irreversible ruin crashed down on her shoulders.

"And one more thing, Vanessa," Bradley added, leaning in close to the steel mesh so only she could hear his final, devastating update.

"The district attorney found the second vial of synthetic potassium hidden inside your Newport townhouse safe."

"Your fingerprints are on the glass."

"The state is filing for aggravated murder with financial motive."

"In Rhode Island, that carries mandatory life without the possibility of parole."

Bradley closed his leather briefcase, clicked the brass latches shut, and walked toward the exit without glancing back.

A long, bloodcurdling scream tore out of Vanessa’s throat, bouncing down the concrete corridors of the jail.

It was the sound of a predator realizing the trap had closed around its own neck forever.
