Chapter 8 - The Serpent's Final Card

Marcus Vance set the thick accordion folder down on the Bennett family dining table, right beside an antique silver vase of white hydrangeas.

The mahogany table, polished to a mirror shine, reflected the legal headers of three different federal jurisdictions.

"She isn't breaking, Graham," Marcus stated without preamble, loosening his silk necktie as he pulled out a stack of depositions.

"Vanessa spent six hours in interrogation overnight."

"She refused water, refused legal aid, and demanded a direct line to the federal prosecutor’s office."

I sat down across from Marcus, pulling my knitted sweater tightly around my chest.

"What could she possibly offer the prosecutors?" I asked, my voice trembling with indignation.

"We have the video, the Swiss forensic toxicology report, and the forged bank records."

"She murdered our father in cold blood!"

Marcus looked at me with deep sympathy, sliding a red-labeled document toward my hands.

"Claire, Vanessa is not trying to deny the murder anymore."

"Her strategy has shifted completely into scorched-earth territory."

"She is claiming that Arthur Bennett’s shipping company was a front for an international maritime smuggling ring."

"She alleges that Arthur’s coma was not induced by her, but was ordered by an overseas syndicate to silence him."

"And she claims she injected him with that potassium compound as a mercy killing under direct coercion from armed men who threatened her life."

I let out a bitter, disbelieving laugh.

"My father shipped certified timber and coastal auto parts between Boston and Nova Scotia!"

"He never broke a single maritime regulation in forty years of business!"

Graham stepped behind my chair, his hand resting firmly on my shoulder, a grounding presence against the rising storm.

"She is trying to create reasonable doubt, Claire," Graham explained calmly, his analytical legal mind cutting through the absurdity.

"If she introduces an alleged criminal conspiracy involving foreign entities, she can delay the trial for years through federal jurisdictional discovery."

"She wants to tie up the Bennett assets in federal escrow so you cannot access a single dime to fight her in court."

"She thinks she can starve you out legally, just like she starved you out financially for eight years."

Marcus nodded grimly, tapping a yellow highlighter against the paper.

"And there is an even dirtier trick she pulled at sunrise."

"Her secondary attorney just filed an emergency motion with the Family Court in Providence."

"She is challenging Lily’s legal custody status."

My breath hitched in my chest, an icy spear of primal motherly terror piercing straight through my heart.

"What custody status?" I gasped, rising halfway out of my chair.

"I am Lily’s mother! I gave birth to her!"

"Vanessa filed an affidavit claiming that because your initial egg donor agreement had procedural irregularities and the embryo implantation was unauthorized by the original clinic board, Lily is legally a ward of the state pending biological verification."

"She is using the state child welfare system as a weapon to pull Lily out of your care and place her in transitional foster custody while the murder trial proceeds."

The room seemed to tilt sideways.

My hand flew to my mouth, my knuckles whitening as the world spun.

Vanessa was sitting in a concrete holding cell facing life behind bars, yet she was still reaching her cold, venomous claws into my life to tear my child away from my arms.

"She will never touch Lily," Graham said, his voice dropping into a deadly, subterranean whisper that sent chills through the room.

"Graham, the family court judge on emergency duty today is Judge Harrison," Marcus warned quietly.

"He is a strict proceduralist."

"If Vanessa’s lawyer files an ex-parte injunction alleging illegal embryonic trafficking, Harrison might issue a temporary protective custody order before we can present counter-evidence."

Graham pulled his smartphone from his pocket, his thumb moving with lightning speed across the screen.

"Then we do not wait for the afternoon docket," Graham ordered, his voice cold and lethal.

"Call the Chief Medical Officer at the Boston Genetics Institute."

"Get the original cryo-preservation chain of custody signed under emergency court seal."

"And tell the District Attorney that if Judge Harrison even considers an ex-parte order against Claire, I will personally file federal racketeering charges against Vanessa’s defense firm for witness intimidation."

"Lily is not just a child in this dispute; she is the star eyewitness for the State of Rhode Island in a capital murder trial."

"Any attempt to separate her from her mother constitutes felony obstruction of justice and witness tampering."

Marcus’s eyes widened, a slow, predatory grin spreading across his face.

"That will lock Harrison’s hands completely," Marcus said, snapping his briefcase shut.

"A family court judge cannot override a federal witness protection mandate issued by the Attorney General."

"Precisely," Graham said, stepping toward the kitchen door where Lily was humming softly to herself.

"Pack Lily’s things, Claire."

"We are going to the Providence Federal Courthouse right now."

"We are going to end Vanessa’s legal circus before it even takes its first breath."
