Chapter 3 - The Executive Panic

Austin stared down at his phone screen, his thumb hovering nervously over the green accept button. The caller ID read: Mr. Vance, Senior Vice President of Global Operations, Apex Logistics.
"Who... who is this?" Brenda muttered, sensing the sudden shift in the heavy air of the hospital room. "Austin, answer it. Tell them you're busy dealing with your ungrateful wife."
Austin cleared his throat, trying to regain his corporate swagger, and swiped to answer. He pressed the phone to his ear, putting on his best sycophantic executive voice. "Mr. Vance! Sir, to what do I owe the honor? I’m currently dealing with a personal family emergency, but—"
"Parker! Where the hell are you?!" Mr. Vance’s voice roared through the phone speaker, loud enough for Brenda and me to hear clearly from three feet away. It wasn't the calm, composed voice of a senior corporate executive; it was the frantic screech of a man standing inside a burning building.
Austin’s face drained of color, the proud flush turning into a sickly, pasty gray. "Sir? I... I’m at the hospital. My wife had a minor accident, but I’m handling it—"
"To hell with your wife!" Vance screamed back. "An unannounced federal and corporate compliance audit team just marched through the front doors of the regional headquarters ten minutes ago! They have locked down the main server room, frozen all departmental asset accounts, and seized every operational ledger under your direct supervision!"
The hospital room seemed to spin on its axis for Austin. He staggered backward half a step, his expensive leather shoe squeaking against the linoleum floor.
"An... an audit?" Austin stammered, his voice cracking into a high-pitched squeak. "Sir, there must be some mistake! I submitted all quarterly compliance reports on time! My numbers are clean! Who authorized an audit without a board vote?"
"It didn't come from a board vote, you idiot!" Vance yelled, his voice trembling with sheer terror. "It came straight from the Office of the Chairwoman! The supreme legal council invoked an immediate, Level-1 forensic asset seizure. They are looking into every single transaction, every procurement contract, and every corporate expense account tied to your regional directorate over the last three years! If they find a single discrepancy, we are all going to federal prison—starting with you!"
Click.
The line went dead.
Austin stood frozen like a statue carved out of cheap ice, his phone still glued to his ear, his mouth slightly open, gasping for air like a fish pulled out of water. The confident, arrogant tyrant who had walked into my hospital room just five minutes prior had completely evaporated, leaving behind a terrified, trembling corporate middle-manager staring straight into the abyss of his own ruin.
Brenda rushed forward, grabbing her son’s arm, her face twisting with anxiety. "Austin? Austin, what did Mr. Vance say? Why are you looking like that? Tell me everything is fine!"
Austin didn't answer her. Slowly, agonizingly, his head turned back toward my hospital bed. His eyes were wide, bloodshot, and filled with a sudden, creeping horror. He looked down at my broken leg, then up at my face, where I was still lying comfortably against the pillows, watching him with calm, unblinking eyes.
"You..." Austin whispered, his voice trembling so violently he could barely form the syllables. "You... you did this."
I tilted my head, letting out a soft, low chuckle. "Did what, Austin? I’m just a jobless freeloader, remember? I’m the worthless dependent living off your glorious corporate salary. How could a crippled woman in an ER bed possibly cause an emergency audit at a multi-national logistics firm?"

Austin took a staggered step toward the bed, his hands raised in a plea that hovered somewhere between desperation and utter madness. "How... who are you? What did you do?!"
Before I could answer, the heavy wooden doors of the emergency room pushed open once more. This time, it wasn't family. It was authority.
