Chapter 4 - The Table Turns in the Emergency Room

Two men in impeccably tailored charcoal suits stepped briskly into the room. They didn't look like medical personnel. They carried polished leather briefcases, wore expensive titanium-framed glasses, and exuded an aura of supreme, unshakeable corporate dominance.
At the head of the duo was Jonathan, the supreme legal counsel and chief corporate trustee of Apex Logistics—a man whose signature carried more weight in global shipping markets than the entire regional board combined.
Brenda gasped, stepping back in shock as the two high-powered lawyers bypassed her and Austin entirely, walking straight up to the side of my hospital bed. To Austin and Brenda’s absolute horror, Jonathan and his associate stopped, straightened their ties, and executed a deep, formal bow of absolute reverence toward my bed.
"Madam Chairwoman," Jonathan said respectfully, his voice rich and steady. "The regional headquarters has been fully secured. The initial phase of the forensic audit is complete. All unauthorized asset transfers, corporate fund misappropriations, and shell company receipts linked to your regional director have been isolated and flagged for federal prosecutors."
The entire emergency room seemed to hold its breath. The nurse, who had just walked back in with fresh gauze, froze in place, her eyes darting between the high-powered corporate lawyers and the quiet woman lying under the hospital blanket.
Austin’s knees buckled. He grabbed the metal railing of my bed to keep from collapsing to the floor, his face completely drained of any remaining color.
"Chairwoman...?" Austin choked out, his voice a pathetic whisper. He looked at Jonathan, then back at me, his brain refusing to process the linguistic puzzle unfolding in front of him. "No... no, that's impossible. She’s my wife! She’s an administrative assistant! She works... she works a basic desk job..."
Jonathan slowly turned his head, fixing Austin with a gaze so cold and piercing that it made the grown man flinch. He adjusted his glasses and looked down at Austin as if he were looking at a cockroach crawling across a high-end rug.
"Administrative assistant?" Jonathan repeated, a faint, mocking smile touching the corners of his mouth. "Mr. Parker, your profound lack of situational awareness is staggering. You were appointed as Regional Director three years ago strictly because your resume crossed the desk of our human resources screening board—a board that operates directly under the ultimate oversight of the corporate controlling stakeholder."
Jonathan paused, turning back to look down at me with deep respect. "Madam Chairwoman inherited controlling equity and absolute voting rights of Apex Logistics from her grandfather five years before you even knew her name, Mr. Parker. You didn't marry a dependent. You married the supreme owner of the entire corporation that signs your paycheck, pays your bonus, and owns the very title deeds to your lavish lifestyle."
Silence descended upon the room—a heavy, suffocating silence broken only by the steady beep of the hospital monitor.
Brenda let out a sharp, choked gasp, her hands flying to her mouth. "Chairwoman?! No... no, this is a sick joke! You're lying! My son is a Director! He's a powerful man! He owns everything!"
"Does he?" I asked softly, finally sitting up a little higher against the pillows, pulling the blanket back slightly to reveal the heavy cast on my leg. I looked directly into Austin’s terrified, wide eyes.
"Austin," I said, my voice carrying the weight of a judge passing a final sentence. "Let's review the assets you so proudly threatened to strip from me just twenty minutes ago. You said you were keeping the luxury penthouse condo?"
Austin trembled, unable to speak, his lips quivering.
"Jonathan," I commanded smoothly. "Whose name is the primary deed of the penthouse registered under in the corporate housing trust?"
Jonathan opened a sleek leather folder, sliding a certified property document out for display. "The penthouse, along with three other luxury residential properties in the city, is 100% owned by the private holding portfolio of Madam Chairwoman. Mr. Parker’s name was merely added as a secondary occupant under revocable corporate housing privileges—privileges that can be terminated with a single stroke of a pen."
I smiled sweetly at Austin, tilting my head. "And what about the custom luxury SUV you drove here today, Austin? The one you parked in the emergency zone?"
Jonathan flipped another page. "The vehicle lease is fully financed through Apex corporate fleet accounts under executive allowance. With Mr. Parker’s immediate suspension and pending criminal fraud investigation, that vehicle is classified as recovered corporate property. In fact, right outside the hospital doors at this very moment, corporate towing agents are repossessing it."
Right on cue, through the large glass window of the emergency room facing the ambulance drop-off zone, a loud mechanical whir echoed outside. We all watched as a massive flatbed tow truck hoisted Austin’s pristine, expensive luxury SUV onto its platform, securing the tires with heavy chains before driving off into the night.

Austin watched his prized vehicle disappear down the street, his chest heaving, tears of pure rage and panic finally spilling over his eyelids.
"And finally," I whispered, leaning forward, resting my elbows on my knees, "the 1.2 million dollars sitting in our 'joint' account."
