Chapter 3 - The Ghost of the Corporate Office

Three days had passed since the disastrous wedding, but the media coverage showed no signs of slowing down. The front pages of every financial and tabloid newspaper featured the image of Victoria in her wedding dress, holding a little girl's hand. Inside the high-rise headquarters of Vance Enterprises, the atmosphere was thick with tension as executives scrambled to assess the damage. Fortunately, because the marriage had never been finalized, Julian had zero legal claim to any of the company’s vast assets. However, the revelation that a high-level executive had been plotting a corporate takeover from within was a massive public relations nightmare.
Victoria sat at the head of the conference room table, wearing a sharp, tailored black suit instead of a white dress. Her father sat to her right, looking exhausted but deeply proud of how his daughter was handling the immense pressure. "We’ve audited every single project Julian was managing over the last eighteen months," the head of internal security reported. "It turns out he was already funneling sensitive data to an offshore shell company registered in the Cayman Islands." The room fell silent as a chart appeared on the large projector screen, showing the complex web of financial deceit.
Victoria leaned forward, her eyes scanning the complex numbers with a sharp, analytical focus that Julian had always underestimated. "He didn't just want my inheritance," she murmured, realization washing over her like a wave of cold ice water. "He was actively trying to bankrupt the company from the inside so that he could buy it back for pennies on the dollar." The sheer scale of the betrayal was staggering, proving that his professions of love had been a calculated performance from day one. Every single date night, every bouquet of flowers, and every comforting word had been nothing more than a tactical move in a corporate war.
Suddenly, the heavy glass doors of the conference room opened, and Victoria’s personal assistant stepped inside, looking pale. "Victoria, I apologize for the interruption, but the police department just called regarding Julian's arrest," she said quickly. "They managed to track down the woman from the recording—the one he was talking to behind the wedding hall." Victoria’s heart skipped a beat, but she maintained her calm composure, gesturing for her assistant to continue. "Her name is Evelyn Cross, and she happens to be the lead acquisition attorney for our primary competitor, Blackwood Holdings."

A collective gasp echoed around the room as the pieces of the puzzle finally fell into place perfectly. Julian hadn't been acting alone; he was an economic spy, hired to destroy Vance Enterprises from the very top. Arthur Vance slammed his fist onto the table, his face flushing a dangerous shade of crimson. "Those bastards at Blackwood thought they could use my daughter's heart to ruin my life's work!" he roared. Victoria placed a gentle, calming hand on her father’s arm, her mind already working three steps ahead of everyone else in the room.
"Let them think they still have an advantage," Victoria said, a cold, dangerous smile touching her lips for the first time. "Julian is in a jail cell, and Blackwood doesn't know exactly how much information we have recovered from his personal laptop yet." She stood up, looking around the room at the board of directors, her voice projecting absolute authority. "We are not going to play defense anymore. We are going to use everything Julian built against them, and we will destroy Blackwood Holdings."
