Chapter 4 - Protecting the Witness

While the corporate war was escalating in the boardrooms, a completely different battle was being fought in the suburbs. Victoria had refused to let Lily return to the run-down, unsafe apartment complex where she had been living with her mother. Instead, she had moved both Lily and her mother, Martha, into one of the highly secure guest houses on the Vance estate. Martha was a frail woman who had spent years working two jobs just to provide a single, decent meal a day for her daughter. She sat on the plush sofa, looking completely overwhelmed by the sheer luxury that surrounded her. Victoria walked into the guest house carrying a tray of hot tea and fresh pastries, discarding her executive persona entirely. "Please, you don't have to serve us," Martha said quickly, starting to stand up out of sheer politeness. "You have already done so much for us by giving us a safe place to stay, Miss Vance." Victoria smiled warmly, setting the tray down on the coffee table and sitting across from the tired mother. "Call me Victoria, please. And truth be told, I am the one who owes your family a debt that I can never truly repay."

Lily was sitting in the corner of the room, happily drawing a picture with a brand-new set of professional markers. For the first time since the wedding, the little girl didn't look terrified or like she was constantly waiting for a blow to land. "The police are going to need Lily to give an official statement tomorrow," Victoria explained gently, her tone turning serious. "Julian's lawyers are trying to claim the audio recording was artificially manipulated using advanced artificial intelligence." Martha’s face filled with sudden fear, her hands trembling as she reached for her teacup.

"They are powerful people, Victoria. They can make people like us disappear, or make us look like liars in court," Martha whispered. "That is exactly why I have hired the best legal team in the country to protect both of you," Victoria reassured her. "I have also assigned round-the-clock security to this guest house; no one enters this estate without my personal approval." She looked over at Lily, who was now showing her a drawing of a big, beautiful garden filled with bright flowers. The innocence of the child was a stark contrast to the ugly, calculated world that Victoria had inhabited for so long.

Later that evening, Victoria walked back to the main house, the cool night air helping to clear her crowded mind. She received a text message from an unknown number, causing her to stop dead in her tracks on the gravel path. The message contained a single image: a photograph of Lily playing in the estate garden, taken from a long-distance lens. Beneath the photo was a simple, chilling sentence: Drop the charges against Julian, or the little girl pays the price. Victoria’s blood ran completely cold, followed instantly by a burning sensation of absolute fury.

She didn't panic; instead, she immediately dialed the head of her personal security detail. "We have a security breach. Lock down the perimeter right now, and bring the tactical team to the guest house," she ordered. They had underestimated her if they thought a threat would make her back down and surrender. She wasn't just defending her family's company anymore; she was defending the child who had saved her from a lifetime of misery.
