Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Marble

As the weeks bled into months, the atmosphere inside the hotel grew increasingly suffocating. The winter of 2026 brought heavy, relentless storms that cut the estate off from the rest of the world, blanketing the mountain in a thick, eerie fog. The guests who arrived during this period were different—more guarded, arriving in blacked-out limousines in the dead of night, escorted by armed security.
Clara began to notice anomalies that she could not ignore. The third floor, usually reserved for the most premium VIPs, was suddenly placed under a strict lockdown. Housekeeping staff were forbidden from entering unless specifically accompanied by Julian himself. Yet, during her late-night shifts, as Clara pushed her heavy cart through the lower levels, she could hear faint, erratic sounds filtering through the ventilation shafts.
It sounded like weeping. A soft, desperate crying that seemed to vibrate through the very pipes of the building.
One evening, while cleaning the communal lounge on the second floor, Clara struck up a conversation with Evelyn, an older maid who had worked at the hotel for over a decade. Evelyn’s hands were shaking as she polished the silver teapots, her eyes darting nervously toward the security cameras in the corners.
"Evelyn," Clara whispered, leaning in under the guise of dusting a nearby bookshelf. "Have you heard anything strange from the upper floors lately? Like... someone is hurt?"
Evelyn froze. The silver polish cloth slipped from her fingers, clattering onto the tray. She grabbed Clara's wrist with surprising strength, her face pale. "You shut your mouth, girl," she hissed, her voice barely a breath. "If you value your sister's life, and your own, you do not listen to the walls. In this place, the walls have ears, and Mr. Vance owns them all."
"But what if someone is trapped?" Clara pleaded, her heart racing. "What if they need help?"

"People come to the Obsidian Crest to disappear, Clara," Evelyn whispered, her gaze dropping to the floor. "Some disappear because they want to. Others... because they have no choice. Do your job. Go home to your family. Do not let curiosity destroy you."
That night, Clara lay awake in her small staff dormitory, the sound of the howling wind outside mimicking the cries she had heard through the vents. She thought of Lily, safe in her hospital bed, funded by blood money. She thought of the mysterious guests. A dangerous, irresistible curiosity had taken root in her mind, and she knew it was only a matter of time before it consumed her.
