Chapter 6 - The Elite's Ledger

Julian’s private office was a monument to wealth and power. Towering bookshelves lined the walls, filled with leather-bound volumes, and a massive mahogany desk sat in the center, bathed in the warm glow of a green banker's lamp.
Julian pushed Clara gently into a leather armchair, then walked behind his desk, pouring himself a glass of amber whiskey. He did not offer her any.
"I am disappointed, Clara," Julian said, taking a slow sip. He set the glass down and removed his black leather gloves, placing them neatly side-by-side on the desk. "I thought you were smarter than this. I thought your love for your sister would make you... compliant."
"What have you done to Sarah?" Clara demanded, her fear briefly giving way to a spark of desperate anger. "She wrote that note! She's in Room 304!"
Julian sighed, shaking his head as if addressing a stubborn child. "Sarah was careless. She saw something she shouldn't have during a private gathering of our most esteemed VIPs. The men who frequent this hotel, Clara, they rule this country. They make the laws. And sometimes, they require certain... private accommodations that the outside world wouldn't understand."
He opened a desk drawer and pulled out a thick, leather-bound ledger. He tapped it. "This is the ledger of the Obsidian Crest. It contains the names, the transactions, and the secrets of every powerful man who has ever walked through these doors. It is what keeps my hotel untouchable. And it is what keeps your sister alive."
Julian leaned forward, his gaze locking onto hers. "If you breathe a word of this, if you try to go to the police, the medical trust for Lily vanishes. And I assure you, Clara, the police belong to the men in this ledger. You will not save Sarah, and you will doom your family. Do you understand the mathematics of your situation?"
Clara felt a cold dread settle deep in her bones. Julian wasn't just a hotel manager; he was the keeper of a monstrous ecosystem of corruption. She looked at her yellow-gloved hands, feeling dirty, feeling completely helpless.
"I understand," Clara whispered, lowering her head, letting her tears fall silently onto her apron.

"Good," Julian said, his voice instantly regaining its warm, polite tone. "Go back to your dormitory. Clean yourself up. Tomorrow, you will work as if nothing happened. Do we have an understanding?"
"Yes, Mr. Vance."
