Chapter 8 - The Price of Daylight

The storm outside raged with renewed fury, rain lashing against the high arched windows of the third floor. Clara stood before the door of Room 304, her breath coming in slow, measured cycles. She had the ledger. She had the key.
She inserted the brass key into the lock. It turned with a heavy, satisfying click.
Clara pushed the door open. The room inside was dark, smelling of copper and neglect. In the corner, huddled on a bare mattress, was Sarah. Her face was pale, her clothes torn, but she was alive. She looked up, her eyes widening in terror as she saw the door open.
"Sarah, it's me. It's Clara," she whispered, rushing to her side. "We have to go. Now."
Sarah could barely stand, her legs weak from days of captivity. Clara slung Sarah's arm over her shoulder, supporting her weight. They made their way slowly out of the room and toward the service elevator at the end of the hall.
"Going somewhere, Clara?"
The voice echoed through the empty corridor. Clara froze.
Julian Vance stepped out of the shadows near the elevator, a sleek, silver revolver in his hand. His face was no longer calm. His eyes were wide with a manic, furious energy, his polished facade completely shattered.
"You took it," Julian hissed, pointing the gun at Clara's chest. "You took the ledger. You have no idea what you've done. You've signed your own death warrant, and your sister's."
"It's over, Julian," Clara said, her voice surprisingly steady despite the terror clawing at her throat. "The ledger is already gone. I scanned the pages and sent them to an encrypted server. If I don't check in by 4:00 PM, they go public."
It was a lie, but she had to play her hand.
Julian hesitated, his eyes darting to the ledger bulging in her apron pocket. In that split second of distraction, Clara grabbed a heavy brass fire extinguisher from the wall mount next to her and threw it with all her strength.
It struck Julian’s arm. The gun fired, the bullet shattering a nearby window, showering them in glass. Julian stumbled back, cursing in pain.
"Run!" Clara screamed.
She dragged Sarah into the service elevator, slamming her hand onto the basement button. The doors closed just as Julian lunged forward, his bloodied hand clawing at the metal grate.
They reached the basement. Clara led Sarah through the dark labyrinth of concrete corridors, toward the old coal chute that led directly to the forest edge. She pushed Sarah through the small opening first, then crawled out after her, tumbling into the cold, driving rain.
They ran through the muddy woods, the towering silhouette of the Obsidian Crest fading into the storm behind them.
Two hours later, they collapsed into the lobby of the city’s central police department, cold, wet, and exhausted. Clara pulled the black leather ledger from her apron and placed it onto the front desk.
"My name is Clara," she said to the stunned officer on duty. "And I want to report a monster."
Three months later.
The spring sun warmed the terrace of the city hospital. Lily sat in a wheelchair, her cheeks rosy and full of life, laughing as she watched the birds in the garden. Her surgery had been successful, funded not by Julian Vance, but by a state victim recovery fund established after the collapse of the Obsidian Crest empire.

Julian Vance and dozens of high-society elites named in the ledger were now awaiting trial, their dark secrets exposed to the harsh light of justice.
Clara stood beside her sister, holding her hand. For the first time in years, the blue maid's uniform was gone, replaced by her own clothes. She looked up at the blue sky, feeling the warm wind on her face. The whispers of the hotel were finally gone, replaced by the beautiful, quiet promise of tomorrow.
