Chapter 8 - The Memorial by the Lake

The rain finally stopped by late afternoon, leaving the air crisp, clean, and smelling of damp pine needles.

I drove my car out to the edge of the private lake bordering the northern edge of the Lake Forest estate—a quiet, secluded spot where Chloe used to love watching the ducks swim during her rare good days.

I stepped out of the car, carrying the small white urn in my arms.

The ground was soft beneath my boots as I walked down to the wooden dock extending out over the water.

I sat down on the edge of the wooden planks, pulling my knees to my chest, hugging the porcelain container tightly against my ribs.

For three years, I had lived in a prison of my own making.

I had believed that by hiding my background, my education, and my financial independence, I could earn Brendan’s genuine love and respect.

I had thought that if I was quiet enough, obedient enough, and small enough, he would eventually see the value of our family.

Instead, his arrogance had blinded him.

His cruelty had starved our daughter of the time she so desperately deserved.

“I’m sorry, baby girl,” I whispered, letting my tears fall freely onto the cool white surface of the urn.

“I stayed too long. I tried to fix a man who was already broken beyond repair. But I promise you, nobody will ever hurt us again.”

A soft footstep crunched on the gravel behind me.

I didn't turn around immediately, knowing it was Raymond.

He walked out onto the dock, stopping a few feet away, holding a folded legal document in his hand.

“How are you holding up, Nora?” Raymond asked softly, his voice carrying the warmth of a surrogate father who had known me since I was a little girl running through my own father’s law office.

“I’m surviving, Raymond,” I said, wiping my eyes and looking out across the sparkling water.

“The transition of corporate assets is complete?”

“Complete,” Raymond confirmed, walking closer and handing me the document.

“Every subsidiary, every offshore account, every trademark, and every patent held by Fairchild Enterprises has been successfully re-registered under Apex-Prescott Global Holdings. Brendan and his father are legally bankrupt, facing federal indictment, and completely stripped of any legal standing.”

I took the paper, glancing at the official court seal stamped in gold at the bottom.

“And Brendan?” I asked.

“He tried to check into a cheap motel downtown using a credit card that was already flagged by our security team,” Raymond said with a dry, humorless chuckle.

“The desk clerk turned him away. Last I heard, he and Samantha were sitting on their luggage outside a 24-hour diner on Route 41, arguing over who had twenty dollars left for a cup of coffee.”

A cold, quiet sense of justice settled over my chest.

I didn't feel joy at his misery.

I just felt the absolute, unshakable weight of balance being restored to the universe.
