Chapter 10 - The Empire We Built Together

Six months after the night Lorenzo Moretti’s shadow was banished from our lives, the city outside was quiet, peaceful, and entirely ours.

The Moretti-Hartley Community Center in Queens was thriving, filled with hundreds of children laughing, learning, and painting every single day. Leo had graduated from his special therapy program with flying colors, his bright smile and joyful laughter echoing through the sunlit halls of the uptown estate where he now lived with us, surrounded by safety, love, and family.

On a warm Friday evening, exactly six months to the day since I had tumbled breathlessly into the backseat of a sleek black SUV running for my life, I stood on the sprawling balcony of the Moretti estate. The sun was setting over the Manhattan skyline, painting the clouds in shades of gold and crimson.

A pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped around my waist from behind, pulling me gently back against a solid, warm chest. Dante rested his chin on my shoulder, inhaling the scent of my hair.

“What are you thinking about?” he asked softly, his breath warm against my neck.

“I was thinking about how crazy life is,” I smiled, turning around in his embrace and wrapping my arms around his neck. “If someone had told me six months ago that I would be running from a deadbeat ex, hijack a mafia boss's car, and end up running an empire with the most dangerous man in the city... I would have told them they were insane.”

Dante chuckled, a deep, rich sound, and leaned down to press a tender, lingering kiss to my lips.

“You didn't hijack my car by accident, Emma,” he murmured against my mouth. “Destiny has a very specific sense of humor. It brought you straight to the only person in the world who was willing to burn down kingdoms to keep you safe.”

“And did you?” I teased softly, raising an eyebrow. “Burn down the kingdom?”

May you like

“To the ground,” Dante replied, his dark eyes shining with absolute devotion and fierce, unending love. “And built a much better one with you.”

I smiled, pressing my forehead against his, feeling the profound peace of a journey that had started in the rain and ended in forever. We weren't just survivors anymore. We were partners, protectors, and a family. And no matter what shadows lurked outside, we owned the night.
