Chapter 9 - The Final Showdown: Blood And Loyalty

The sprawling uptown estate was silent as a tomb when Dante and I returned from Queens. Viktor and a dozen armed security operatives had secured the perimeter, their tactical gear and weapons a grim reminder that war had arrived at our doorstep.

In the grand foyer, standing near the massive floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city, was an older man with silver hair slicked back, wearing an impeccably tailored white linen suit. Despite his age, his posture radiated an ancient, ruthless authority.

Lorenzo Moretti turned around slowly, a cold, predatory smile spreading across his weathered face.

“Dante, my boy,” Lorenzo purred, his voice dripping with Italian-accented menace. “You built quite an empire on the ashes I left behind. But you grew soft. Taking in stray waitresses... letting civilian blood mix with Moretti royalty.”

Dante stepped forward, placing himself squarely between Lorenzo and me, his body rigid as steel.

“You stepped foot in my city without permission, Uncle,” Dante said, his voice a low, lethal growl. “That is a mistake you will not survive.”

Lorenzo chuckled, a dry, grating sound. He raised his hand, and two of his personal enforcers stepped out from the shadows near the staircase, holding heavy firearms aimed straight at us.

“You think you hold all the cards, Dante?” Lorenzo sneered. “You think because you dismantled Salazar, you are untouchable? The old families in Sicily are backing me now. We take back the syndicate, starting with your execution—and finishing with the little girl who ruined your judgment.”

Time seemed to slow down. I looked at the armed enforcers, then at Dante. I knew what I was supposed to do—hide, stay back, let the men handle the violence. But I wasn't the terrified waitress who had jumped into a wrong car anymore.

As Lorenzo's enforcer raised his weapon to fire, I didn't scream. I slid my hand into my coat pocket, gripped the heavy metal legal ledger I had carried from Romano's, and hurled it with all my strength straight into the face of the nearest gunman, catching him squarely off guard.

The gunman stumbled. That split-second distraction was all Dante needed.

With blinding speed, Dante drew his weapon, firing twice with absolute precision. Both of Lorenzo’s enforcers collapsed to the floor.

Before Lorenzo could even blink, Dante crossed the room, grabbed his uncle by the lapels of his white suit, and slammed him against the glass window with bone-crushing force. The glass spiderwebbed outward, high above the glittering city lights.

“It’s over, Lorenzo,” Dante whispered, his voice carrying the terrifying weight of absolute finality. “Your reign ended ten years ago.”

Viktor and the security team swarmed the foyer, disarming the remaining threats and securing the estate. Dante slowly released his grip, letting his uncle slide to the floor in defeat.

Dante turned around, breathing heavily, his dark eyes scanning me frantically to ensure I was unharmed. He rushed across the room, pulling me into his arms, burying his face in my hair.

“Are you hurt?” he demanded, his voice uncharacteristically frantic. “Emma, tell me you're not hurt.”

“I'm okay,” I whispered, wrapping my arms tightly around his waist, feeling the fierce, protective beating of his heart. “I'm right here.”

The threat was gone. The bloodline of betrayal had been severed for good.
