Chapter 8 - Family Ties And Buried Secrets

The grand opening of the Moretti-Hartley Community Center in Queens was a massive success. Dozens of families, children, and local organizers crowded the bright, modern rooms, laughing, painting, and celebrating a new chapter for a neighborhood that had struggled for years against poverty and cartel influence.
Standing near the large bay windows overlooking the children's playground, I watched Leo laughing as he played with a new set of building blocks, accompanied by a dedicated private therapist. His bright smile melted away every lingering shadow of fear I had carried from our past.
“He looks happy,” a deep, familiar voice murmured beside me.
I turned to see Dante standing there, holding a small cup of juice for Leo, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit that commanded the respect of every dignitary and local official in the room.
“He is happy,” I said softly, leaning my shoulder against his arm. “We both are. I still can't believe this is real, Dante. Sometimes I feel like I'm going to wake up back in that restaurant kitchen.”
Dante gently placed his hand over mine, his fingers interlacing with warmth and absolute permanence.
“You will never go back to that life, Emma. You earned every piece of this peace. Never doubt your own strength.”
Before I could reply, Viktor approached us, his expression unusually tense, holding a secure encrypted tablet.
“Boss, we have a situation at the uptown estate. A visitor. Someone claiming to be family.”
Dante’s expression instantly hardened into ice. “Who?”
“Your uncle, Lorenzo Moretti. He just flew in from Palermo.”
The name hung in the air like a poisoned blade. Lorenzo Moretti—the exiled patriarch of the old-guard syndicate who had fled Italy a decade ago after a bloody internal power struggle, leaving Dante to clean up the family's bloody empire.
Dante’s jaw tightened, a muscle ticking along his chiseled jawline.
“He has no business in this city,” Dante stated coldly. “And he certainly has no business near my home.”
“Dante,” I said, touching his arm gently. “What does he want?”
Dante looked down at me, his dark eyes swirling with a storm of old grief, anger, and protective fury.

“He wants what he has always wanted: control,” Dante replied, his voice deadly quiet. “And if he knows about you... if he knows how important you have become to me... he will use you to try and break me.”
The illusion of a peaceful fairy tale shattered instantly, replaced by the harsh, brutal reality of the mafia dynasty Dante ruled. Lorenzo Moretti wasn't a small-time parasite like Marcus; he was an apex predator from the old country, and he had just stepped onto our chessboard.
