Chapter 2 - Beneath the Black Water

The absolute shock and horror on my family’s faces was worth the five years of pure hell I had endured.

I returned the Admiral’s salute with absolute military precision. “Thank you, sir. It is good to be back,” I said, my voice steady, cold, and carrying across the dead-silent room.

Serena dropped the torn fabric of my shirt as if it had burned her, her manicured hands suddenly trembling uncontrollably.

Julian’s smug, arrogant smile vanished instantly, replaced by a pale, sickening dread that made him look like a ghost.

They finally remembered the girl they had so viciously kicked out to protect their dark secrets.

Five years ago, I had discovered that Sterling Global wasn’t just a legitimate, world-renowned shipping company.

I found the hidden ledgers. My father had been using our massive cargo ships to smuggle illegal weapons and military-grade technology through international waters.

When I confronted him and threatened to blow the whistle to the feds, my own flesh and blood had me forcibly committed to a private, off-the-books psychiatric ward.

They drugged me. They told the world I was mentally unstable. They legally stripped me of my shares, erased my name from the family trust, and finally dumped me on the streets of a foreign city with nothing but the clothes on my back.

They thought I would break. They thought I would crawl back begging for forgiveness.

Instead, I walked straight into a Navy recruitment office and signed my life away.

I traded designer dresses for heavy combat boots, and luxury penthouses for the cramped, suffocating bunks of a naval destroyer.

I pushed my body and mind to the absolute limit, enduring grueling training, rising through the ranks faster than anyone in the history of my division.

Then came that fateful night in the South China Sea. A rogue wave, a massive structural failure, and a catastrophic electrical fire in the lower decks.

The freezing water was rising fast, and the toxic black smoke was blinding.

When the primary bulkhead door jammed, trapping six terrified young sailors in a flooding corridor, I didn’t even stop to think.

I put my back against the blistering, red-hot steel and pushed with everything I had.

I held it open while my skin literally burned, my muscles tearing, screaming in sheer agony until the very last sailor crawled out to safety.

I spent three agonizing months in a secure military burn unit, undergoing endless skin grafts.

My family never visited. They didn’t even know I was alive.

But the highest levels of the military brass knew exactly who I was and what I had done.

And while I was lying in a hospital bed, naval intelligence had been quietly investigating the very shipping routes my father was exploiting.

They needed someone who knew the Sterling empire from the inside. And they had put me in charge of the elite task force to tear it down.
