Chapter 8 - Ashes of an Empire

The complete and utter fall of Sterling Global was the biggest financial and criminal news story of the entire decade.
Arthur Sterling was found guilty on multiple federal charges and sentenced to twenty-five years without the possibility of parole in a maximum-security federal prison.
Julian, ever the coward, took a desperate plea deal to save his own skin and was currently serving five years in a minimum-security facility.
Serena was legally stripped of everything she owned, forced into hundreds of hours of grueling community service, and completely shunned by the very high society she used to worship.
Months later, I stood on the steel deck of my brand-new assignment—a state-of-the-art naval cruiser—feeling the brisk, salty sea breeze against my face.
The raised scars on my back and neck would never truly fade away.
They would always be a little tight, and they would always ache a little bit in the freezing cold air.
But I no longer saw them as horrific marks of trauma inflicted by my past. They were my hard-earned medals of survival.
“Beautiful day for a sail, isn't it, Commander?” a deep, familiar voice said from right behind me.
I turned around to see David standing there, smiling warmly, holding two steaming cups of coffee in his hands.
He handed me one, stepping in close to the railing so that our shoulders brushed gently against each other.
“The courts liquidated the very last of the Sterling corporate assets today,” he mentioned casually, looking out at the water. “Most of the billions went directly to international restitution. The rest was anonymously donated to veteran burn units across the country.”
I smiled—a real, genuine, unburdened smile that finally reached my eyes for the first time in five long years.
“Good,” I said softly, taking a slow sip of the hot coffee, letting the peace of the moment wash over me.
The weak, naive billionaire heiress named Victoria was dead, completely erased by the very toxic people who had created her.
But the battle-hardened woman who had fiercely taken her place was entirely unbreakable.
I looked out at the endless, glittering horizon of the open ocean, the sun reflecting off the gentle waves.
I had lost a toxic, abusive family, but I had gained an honorable, loyal one in return.
My brave crew was my family. David was my family.

The dark empire of my past was nothing but ashes now, but from those very ashes, I had finally built a beautiful life of my own.
And nobody in this world would ever have the power to erase me again.
