Chapter 10 - The Statement

The FBI field office was cold and sterile.
I sat in a small conference room across from Marcus and another agent.
"Your parents and sister spent the night in a holding cell," Marcus informed me.
"Have they confessed?" I asked, keeping my voice steady.
"The lawyer, Davis, gave us everything," the other agent said.
"He turned over emails, text messages, and bank statements proving the conspiracy."
I nodded slowly, processing the finality of it all.
"Will they go to prison?"
"Given the amount of money involved in the fraud, yes," Marcus said honestly.
"They are facing a minimum of five years in federal prison."
I took a deep breath.
"Okay. What do you need from me?"
For the next three hours, I detailed everything.
I explained how my grandfather had discovered the embezzlement.
I walked them through how I found the fake deeds on my father's old hard drive.
I didn't leave a single detail out.
When it was over, Marcus handed me a copy of my statement to sign.
"You're free to go, Clare," he said softly.

"Is it really over?" I asked, handing the pen back.
He nodded. "It's over."
