Chapter 7 - No Way Out

"Are you arresting us too?" my father asked, his voice barely a whisper.
Marcus finished locking the cuffs on Julia and looked up.
"There are warrants out for all three of you."
My mother's legs gave out, and she collapsed onto the sofa, sobbing loudly.
"Clare, please tell him to stop! We can fix this!" she begged.
"How?" I asked, looking down at her. "By giving me back the house I already own?"
"We'll leave!" my father promised quickly. "We'll go back to Ohio and never bother you again."

"He forgave that!" my father yelled.
"He ignored it," I corrected. "But when you tried to steal my future, that was the final straw."
Marcus spoke into a radio on his lapel.
"Team, move in. Secure the suspects."

Julia was sobbing hysterically as an officer led her out the front door.
My mother tried to cling to the sofa cushions, but an officer gently but firmly pulled her up.
"Clare! I gave birth to you!" she screamed as they cuffed her.
"And you spent twenty-eight years making me regret it," I whispered.
My father didn't fight.
He just glared at me with cold, dead eyes as the cuffs clicked around his wrists.

"You're dead to me," he spat.
"The feeling is mutual," I said, turning my back on him.
