Chapter 6 - The Sinking Ship

The lawyer, Mr. Davis, suddenly stood up straight.

"Agent Vance," he said, his voice trembling but clear. "If I cooperate fully, can I get immunity?"

"Mr. Davis, no!" my father roared, lunging toward the lawyer.

Marcus stepped between them, his hand resting casually near his hip.

"I suggest you stay exactly where you are, Mr. Thompson."

My father froze, breathing heavily, realizing he was trapped.

"I can give you the emails," Davis babbled to Marcus. "I have all the correspondence. Julia Thompson sent me the fake deeds."

Julia shrieked and threw her expensive handbag at Davis.

"You worthless coward!" she screamed.

The handbag hit the wall, spilling makeup and credit cards across the floor.

"Julia," I said, my voice sharp. "Stop embarrassing yourself."

She spun around to face me, her face flushed with fury.

"You think you've won? You think you can just send your own family to jail?"

"I didn't commit the crimes," I reminded her.

"We are your blood!" she yelled. "If you do this, you'll have no one left!"

"I haven't had a real family for a long time," I replied softly.

Marcus pulled a pair of handcuffs from his belt.

"Julia Thompson, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit wire fraud."

Julia's eyes widened in sheer panic.

"No. No, wait, please!"

She backed away as Marcus stepped toward her, securing her wrists in a smooth, practiced motion.

"Mom! Dad! Do something!" she cried out.

But they just watched, completely paralyzed by their own fear.
