Chapter 2 - The Cost of Ignorance

Vanessa moved closer into the room, her heavy perfume competing with the smell of sickness. She reached out to touch Ethan's arm, her voice softening into a manipulative purr. "Come upstairs, darling. Don’t let them ruin your homecoming. The staff always exaggerate their illnesses when they want a handout or a bonus. Cole warned me about her."

Elena’s face remained remarkably calm despite the physical agony she was enduring. However, Ethan noticed her fingers tighten around the thin, frayed blanket.

What Ethan didn't know—what he had been too busy to see—was the living hell Elena had endured for the past six months. Vanessa had made it her personal mission to torment the quiet housekeeper. She had mocked Elena's slight accent in front of guests, intentionally withheld her weekly wages under the guise of "administrative delays," canceled her mandatory medical insurance appointments, and repeatedly threatened to call the police to report her as a thief if she ever complained.

And Cole Mercer, Ethan’s trusted estate director, had supported every single one of Vanessa’s lies. Together, they had systematically painted a picture of Elena as an unreliable, untrustworthy worker.

Ethan had believed them blindly. He believed them because he was rarely home, constantly flying across the globe to secure multi-billion-dollar deals, leaving the management of his personal life to the woman he thought he loved and the director he thought he trusted.

"Get out," Ethan said, his voice terrifyingly quiet.

Vanessa blinked, startled. "What did you say?"

"I said, get out of this room, Vanessa. Now."

Ignoring her furious gasps, Ethan pulled out his phone and dialed emergency services. Within ten minutes, the loud wails of an ambulance siren pierced the quiet luxury of the estate. Two paramedics rushed down the servants' corridor with a stretcher.

As they carefully lifted Elena, who groaned in agony as her fractured ribs shifted, Vanessa stood in the main hallway, her face flushed with embarrassment. As the stretcher passed her, she leaned in and hissed viciously, "You’ve embarrassed me in front of the neighborhood for the last time, you pathetic peasant. You're fired, and I'll make sure you never find work in this city again."

Elena, despite her weakness, opened her dark eyes and met Vanessa’s furious glare without a single hint of fear.

"No," Elena said softly, her voice steady despite her shallow breathing. "You embarrassed yourself, Ms. Cross. I only kept the receipts."

For a fraction of a second, Vanessa’s arrogant expression shattered. A flicker of sheer, unadulterated panic crossed her features before she quickly masked it with a sneer.

But Ethan caught it. He saw the flash of terror in his fiancée's eyes, and a cold dread settled deep in his stomach. There was a story here—a massive, dangerous story—and he had been completely blind to it.

As the paramedics wheeled Elena out toward the driveway, little Leo lagged behind for a moment. He walked up to Ethan, his small face solemn. Ensuring that Vanessa was out of earshot, the boy reached into his pocket and slipped a small, heavy object into Ethan’s palm. It was a sleek, waterproof flash drive.

"Mom told me to give you this," Leo whispered, looking around nervously. "But only if you came home before they forced us to leave. She said you needed to see the truth before it was too late."

Ethan closed his fingers tightly around the cold metal drive. "Thank you, Leo. Go with your mom. I'll be right behind you."

As Ethan walked past Vanessa toward his car, he didn't say a word. For the first time since they had met, Vanessa Cross looked genuinely afraid, staring at the closed fist where Ethan held the key to her secrets.
