Chapter 3 - Decoding the Deception

The white, sterile corridors of the hospital felt miles away from the warmth of Ethan's mansion. The emergency room doctors worked quickly, diagnosing Elena with two cracked ribs, severe dehydration, and dangerous complications arising from untreated pneumonia. She was immediately placed on an IV drip and given strong pain medication.

Ethan sat in the quiet waiting room, staring blankly at the flash drive in his hand. He felt as if he were holding a live explosive device. Leo was asleep on the plastic chair next to him, exhausted from a day of manual labor and emotional trauma.

"What is on this, Leo?" Ethan had asked the boy right before he fell asleep.

The boy had swallowed hard, his voice echoing with a wisdom no eight-year-old should possess. "Mom always says that numbers don’t lie, Mr. Vale. But she also says that rich people sometimes pay other people a lot of money to lie for them."

Ethan opened his encrypted laptop and plugged the drive into the USB port. A single, password-protected directory appeared. Remembering the boy's words, Ethan tried a logical guess for the password—the date Elena had started working for him. The drive clicked open.

There were two main folders. The first was labeled simple: HOUSEHOLD.

When Ethan opened it, a list of video and audio files populated the screen. He clicked the first video file, and his blood ran cold. It was security footage from his own home—footage that Cole Mercer had explicitly told him had been permanently deleted due to a system glitch.

The video showed Vanessa viciously shoving Elena against a heavy oak cabinet because a vase hadn't been dusted to her liking. Ethan watched in horror as Elena collapsed, clutching her ribs in obvious pain—the exact injury she was currently hospitalized for.

The next video showed Cole Mercer opening the weekly staff payroll envelopes, deliberately removing hundreds of dollars from each worker's pay, and pocketing the cash. There were audio recordings of Vanessa and Cole screaming at the kitchen staff, forcing them to clock out on the digital system but demanding they remain in the house to work another six hours under threat of termination.

Ethan’s hands shook against the keyboard. The woman he had intended to marry was a monster, and his trusted estate director was a common thief. But the nightmare was only beginning.

He closed the first folder and clicked on the second one: VALE FOUNDATION.

The Vale Foundation was Ethan’s proudest achievement. It was a multi-million-dollar charitable organization dedicated to funding children’s hospitals and providing life-saving surgeries for underprivileged youth worldwide.

As Ethan scrolled through the financial ledgers, bank routing numbers, and invoice sheets contained in the folder, the color completely drained from his face.

Millions of dollars explicitly meant for pediatric cardiac units and medical equipment had been systematically routed through a network of shell companies and consulting firms. A quick cross-reference revealed that every single one of those consulting firms was owned by Cole Mercer’s biological brother.

Vanessa had approved dozens of fraudulent invoices for massive charity gala events that had never taken place. But the final blow struck Ethan right in the chest. At the bottom of three major wire transfer authorizations—totaling over fifteen million dollars—was Ethan’s own encrypted digital signature.

"They forged this," Ethan whispered into the empty, silent corridor, his chest tightening. "They used my name to rob sick children."

"Not all of it was forged, Mr. Vale."

Ethan jumped, quickly closing a portion of the screen. He turned around to see a weak, fragile figure standing in the doorway of the waiting room. Elena was standing there, dressed in a loose hospital gown, her body supported by a compassionate night nurse. Her face was pale, but her eyes were sharp, filled with an intense, unyielding intelligence.

Ethan immediately rose from his chair. "Elena, what are you doing out of bed? You need to rest."

"And you need to know exactly who has been stealing your life from under you," Elena replied, her voice strained but firm. She gently waved the nurse away and sat down slowly in the chair opposite Ethan, wincing as she settled her injured ribs.

"You knew about all of this?" Ethan asked, gesturing wildly to the laptop screen. "How? How could a housekeeper access these encrypted financial servers?"

Elena looked at him, a ghost of a sad smile touching her lips. "Before I was the woman who cleaned your toilets, Ethan... my name was Elena Ramirez, Senior Forensic Accountant at Vale Holdings."
