Chapter 6 - The Trap is Sprung

The grand ballroom of the Vale Manor was a spectacle of absolute opulence. Hundreds of the city’s most powerful political donors, high-profile corporate executives, elite socialites, and media reporters mingled beneath the massive, glittering crystal chandeliers. The air was filled with the gentle sounds of a live string quartet and the clinking of expensive crystal glasses.

Vanessa Cross stood at the center of the room, looking radiant in a custom-made, emerald-green silk gown. A flawless diamond necklace sparkled around her throat. Cole Mercer stood close by her side, looking sharp in a tailored tuxedo, smoothly reassuring wealthy donors that their recent contributions to the Vale Foundation were being put to "excellent use."

"Where is Ethan?" Vanessa whispered out of the corner of her mouth to Cole, her smile never fading as she waved to a passing senator. "The media keeps asking for a joint statement about the engagement announcement."

"His assistant said he went to the corporate headquarters to handle an urgent international crisis," Cole whispered back, taking a sip of his drink. "Don't worry, Vanessa. He'll be here. The man is entirely predictable. He never misses a major foundation event."

Suddenly, the large double doors at the back of the ballroom—the service doors reserved strictly for catering staff and domestic workers—swung wide open.

The room grew quiet as Ethan Vale entered the space. But he wasn't alone. Walking directly beside him, dressed in a simple but elegant tailored charcoal coat, was Elena Ramirez. Her posture was perfectly straight, her head held high, completely unfazed by the sea of wealthy elites staring at her.

Vanessa’s smile instantly vanished, replaced by a mask of sheer fury. She quickly handed her glass to a nearby server and marched across the polished marble floor, her high heels clicking loudly against the stone. Cole followed closely behind her, his eyes narrowing in sudden apprehension.

"Ethan! Thank goodness you're finally here," Vanessa exclaimed, her voice dripping with forced sweetness before she cast a venomous look at Elena. "But what is this doing here? I explicitly fired this woman yesterday for gross incompetence and theft. Security! Get this maid out of my sight immediately."

Ethan crossed his arms, standing like an immovable wall between Vanessa and Elena. "This isn't a social visit, Vanessa. Consider it a mandatory corporate staff meeting."

Vanessa let out a loud, mocking laugh, looking around at the surrounding guests to garner support. "A staff meeting? Ethan, stop being ridiculous. She is a maid! She scrubs floors and polishes silver. Who in this room could possibly believe a single word that comes out of her mouth?"

Elena stepped forward, her calm, resonant voice cutting right through the murmurs of the crowded room.

"I was a maid, Ms. Cross," Elena said, her eyes locked onto Vanessa's pale face. "But five years ago, before I took that position, I was the Senior Forensic Accountant at Vale Holdings who uncovered the initial twelve million dollars you and Cole systematically systematically siphoned from the pediatric medical relief funds."

A collective gasp echoed through the elite crowd. Reporters immediately raised their recording devices, flashes from cameras beginning to pop across the room.

"You're insane!" Cole shouted, stepping forward aggressively, his face flushed with anger. "You're a disgruntled domestic worker making baseless, slanderous accusations. Security, remove her now!"

Before Cole could take another step, two tall, sharply dressed men in dark suits stepped out from the crowd, blocking his path. They opened their badges, revealing the crest of the federal government. "Federal Agents. Nobody moves."

At that exact moment, the massive electronic projection screens behind the main stage—which were supposed to display a promotional video showcasing the foundation's charitable works—suddenly flickered and went entirely dark.

A second later, the screens lit up, displaying highly confidential financial bank routing charts, explicit wire transfer records, and undeniable metadata tracing directly to Cole and Vanessa's private digital devices.

And then, the high-fidelity sound system of the ballroom came alive. Vanessa’s own clear, arrogant voice filled every corner of the vast room, echoing off the high ceilings.

> "Once Ethan signs the prenuptial marriage trust tonight, we move the remaining forty percent of the foundation assets to the Cayman accounts. If he discovers anything down the road, it won't matter. The digital signatures are all his. He’ll look like the greedy billionaire who robbed sick children to fund his own empire, and we walk away completely clean."

The ballroom fell into a horrified, breathless silence.
