Chapter 7 - The Web of Syndicate Money and the Dangerous Gamble of Uncovering the Truth

The implications of the video footage crashed over me like a tidal wave, washing away any lingering illusion that I could simply walk away from Mark’s wreckage and live a quiet life.
If Julian and his syndicate viewed Mark as the weak link, and Mark had been using our household stability as a smoke screen for illegal money laundering, then I was already a target.
I scrolled further down the directory list on the external DVR drive, clicking through file after file of covert surveillance footage recorded inside the secret downtown apartment.
There were hours of meetings between Mark, Julian, and several other high-ranking corporate executives, all of them passing briefcases filled with cash and signing off on fraudulent wire transfers.
Then, my cursor hovered over a file dated just four days ago, titled simply: "Dani_Observation_Feed.mp4."
My breath hitched in my throat as I clicked play, watching in absolute horror as the camera angle shifted to show the exterior of my own pottery studio downtown.
The camera was zoomed in tightly on the front entrance of my studio, tracking my every movement as I carried bags of clay and ceramic supplies out to my SUV earlier that week.
Then, the camera panned across the street to show a sleek, black sedan parked illegally in the red zone, its tinted windows hiding whoever was sitting inside watching me work.
A gloved hand reached out from the driver's side window of the sedan, holding a telephoto camera lens pointed directly at my studio window, snapping photos of me through the glass.
The video proved that I hadn't just stumbled into Mark’s mess by accident; I had been under active surveillance by dangerous criminals for days, perhaps even weeks.
My phone buzzed loudly on the kitchen island, breaking the eerie silence of the room and making me jump nearly a foot off my stool.
I looked down at the screen, expecting another text from the unknown sender, but instead, an incoming phone call flashed with a restricted, blocked caller ID.
My thumb hovered over the green accept button, vibrating against the glass as the persistent ringing echoed off the kitchen walls like an alarm bell.
I pressed accept, pulling the phone slowly up to my ear without saying a word, waiting to hear who was lurking on the other end of the line.
"You really should have stopped at the divorce settlement, Danielle," a deep, gravelly voice murmured through the speaker, dripping with sinister menace.
"Who is this?" I demanded, my voice hardening instantly as I channeled every ounce of courage I possessed to keep my tone from shaking.
"Let's just say I'm an old business associate of your dear, departed husband, and you're currently holding something that belongs very securely in my possession," Julian’s voice replied smoothly.
"If you're talking about the DVR unit left on my front porch, you're welcome to come and get it—right after I hand it over to the FBI field office downtown," I countered bluffly.
A low, chilling chuckle echoed through the phone line, sending ice water straight down my veins as I realized the gravity of the threat I had just made.
"The FBI can't protect you in your little suburban house, Danielle. But if you want to save yourself and keep your precious pottery studio intact, bring the drive to Pier 4 at midnight," Julian instructed.
"And why should I trust a word you say?" I challenged, gripping the edge of the kitchen island so hard my knuckles turned completely white.
May you like
"Because if you don't show up with the drive, the next video we send you won't be of Mark in a boardroom—it'll be of your workshop burning to the ground with all your life's work inside," Julian threatened coldly.
The line went dead with a sharp click before I could utter another word, leaving me alone in the dark kitchen with the terrifying weight of an ultimatum hanging over my head.
