Chapter 8 - The Midnight Meeting at Pier 4 and the Trap That Almost Cost Me Everything

I didn't call the police, and I didn't cower in fear; instead, I opened my laptop, uploaded every single file from the DVR drive to an encrypted cloud server, and set up an automated release timer.
If I didn't manually reset the timer by 2:00 AM, the entire cache of money laundering evidence, surveillance footage, and syndicate records would automatically forward to federal investigators and local media outlets.
I slipped my car keys into my coat pocket, checked the safety latch on the small can of pepper gel I always kept in my bag, and walked out to my SUV in the dark driveway.
The drive down to the industrial harbor district was completely deserted, the empty shipping lanes and towering cargo cranes looming like skeletal giants against the foggy night sky.
When I pulled up to Pier 4, the rusted metal gates were pushed open just wide enough to admit a single vehicle, casting long, distorted shadows across the cracked asphalt.
I parked my SUV beneath a flickering overhead sodium streetlight, killed the engine, and stepped out into the biting, salt-laced wind blowing off the dark ocean water.
Waiting at the edge of the wooden pier was a single figure standing beside a idling black sedan, their trench coat collar flipped up against the bitter chill of the harbor air.
As I approached, stepping carefully over rotting wooden planks, the man turned around, revealing the heavy-set frame and sharp, predatory eyes I recognized from the surveillance videos.
"You actually came, Danielle. I must admit, I underestimated your nerve," Julian said, his voice carrying clearly over the gentle lapping of dark waves against the wooden pylons.
"I have the drive right here in my pocket, Julian. But before I hand it over, I want guarantees that you leave me, my home, and my business completely alone," I stated firmly, standing my ground.
Julian smiled, a humorless, cruel smirk that didn't reach his cold, dead eyes as he took a slow step forward, extending an open hand toward me.
"You're in no position to negotiate terms, my dear. Hand over the drive, and you get to walk away from this pier alive and breathing," Julian replied, his tone dropping into a dangerous ultimatum.
Before I could react, the sound of heavy footsteps crunching on gravel echoed behind me, and strong, calloused hands grabbed my arms, pinning them tightly against my sides.
I struggled violently, kicking backward with my boots and thrashing against my captor, but a second man emerged from the shadows, pressing a rough cloth smelling of chemical solvents over my face.
"Don't waste your energy, sweetheart. Boss wants the drive, and then we're taking care of loose ends," a gruff voice whispered harshly in my ear as the sweet, suffocating chemical fumes filled my lungs.
My vision began to swim, the spinning dock lights blurring into chaotic streaks of yellow and white as my knees buckled beneath me, dragging me down toward the cold wooden planks.
May you like
Through the fog of the chemical haze, I saw Julian reach into my coat pocket, pull out the dummy USB drive I had prepared, and inspect it with a triumphant grin.
"Pleasure doing business with you, Danielle," Julian’s voice echoed distantly as darkness swallowed my consciousness whole, plunging me into a terrifying abyss of uncertainty.
