Chapter 11 - The Return to the Penthouse and the Unspoken Boundaries Crossed

The armored Mercedes-Benz glided past the doorman of the Manhattan high-rise at 2:15 AM, the tires crunching softly against the fresh layer of snow blanketing the city streets.

By the time we rode the private elevator up to Luca’s penthouse suite on the sixty-fifth floor, the weight of the evening had settled over us like a physical blanket of exhaustion.

The penthouse was dark, silent, and cavernous, illuminated only by the faint, ambient glow of the city lights pouring through the massive glass walls and the twinkling white lights of a towering Christmas tree standing alone in the corner of the living room.

I kicked off my heels near the entryway, letting out a long, shuddering breath as I unpinned the practical hair knot that had held my hair in place all day, letting my dark waves cascade down around my shoulders.

Behind me, Luca stepped out of his suit jacket, tossing it over the back of a velvet armchair before walking slowly toward the kitchen island.

“Do you want a drink, Emma?” his deep voice drifted through the quiet apartment.

“Water would be fine, thanks,” I replied softly, walking over to the floor-to-ceiling windows and pressing my forehead against the cool glass, staring down at the quiet, snow-dusted streets of Manhattan far below.

A moment later, footsteps approached silently across the hardwood floor.

The glass of ice water was set down on the marble console table beside me, and then Luca’s arms wrapped around my waist from behind, pulling me back against the solid, warm wall of his chest.

I closed my eyes, leaning my head back against his shoulder, letting out a quiet sigh as his hands rested flat over my stomach.

“Are you regretting it yet?” he whispered, his breath warm against the sensitive skin of my neck.

“Regretting what?”

“Walking into that drawing room. Standing up to my grandfather. Declaring war on my family’s legacy just to keep an arrogant billionaire from being forced into an arranged marriage.”

I turned around within his embrace, resting my hands against his chest, looking up into his dark, intense eyes.

“I don't regret standing up to bullies, Luca,” I said quietly, adjusting my wire-rimmed glasses, which had somehow survived the entire ordeal.

“Whether their name is Moretti or a rude contractor in Brooklyn. But let’s be completely honest here… what happens when the holidays are over? What happens when Monday morning arrives, and we walk back into the executive suite on the forty-eighth floor?”

Luca’s expression darkened instantly.

The relaxed, tender posture vanished, replaced by the sharp, unyielding focus of a man who never left anything to chance.

“You think Monday morning is going to be business as usual?” he asked, his voice dropping into a low, serious register.

“You think after everything that happened tonight—after I told my entire family that you are the only woman I would ever choose—you’re going to go back to sitting outside my office organizing my calendar?”

“Well… yes?” I stammered, a sudden flutter of panic hitting my chest.

“I am your executive assistant, Luca. That is my job.”

“Your job description just changed permanently, Emma,” Luca stated, his hands sliding up to frame my face, his thumbs gently tracing my cheekbones.

“Effective immediately, you are no longer just managing my schedule. You are managing my life. All of it. Starting with moving out of that drafty walk-up in Astoria and into this penthouse by tomorrow evening.”

My jaw dropped.

“Into this penthouse?! Luca, we haven't even had our first official date!”

“We just survived a syndicate holiday ambush, a proxy marriage trap, and a face-off with a mafia patriarch,” Luca pointed out with a completely straight face.

“I’d say our first date was exceptionally productive.”
