Chapter 5 - The Midnight Ultimatum in the Study: When the Game Becomes Reality

The formal dinner ended twenty agonizing minutes later under a cloud of heavy, suffocating silence.

As soon as the final course of espresso and artisanal pastries was cleared, Luca excused himself and me from the dining room, his hand firmly guiding my elbow as we navigated the grand staircase toward the privacy of the second-floor executive study.

The moment the heavy mahogany door clicked shut behind us, locking out the noise of the party downstairs, the manufactured composure I had maintained all evening finally fractured.

I pulled my arm out of his grasp, stepping back and glaring at him.

“Are you out of your mind?!” I hissed, my voice echoing off the book-lined walls.

“Threatening your own uncle at the Christmas dinner table?! Luca, he’s head of legal! He could make your life a living hell!”

Luca didn't flinch.

He walked calmly over to the mahogany bar in the corner of the study, poured two fingers of amber scotch into a crystal tumbler, and turned around to face me.

“Marco crossed a line,” Luca said flatly, taking a slow sip.

“He insulted you. Nobody insults the woman sitting beside me at my family table.”

“It’s a fake relationship, Luca!” I shouted, throwing my hands up in exasperation.

“I am your executive assistant! I organize your calendar and order your mother’s—your grandmother’s flowers! You don't need to threaten your entire family to defend a lie!”

Luca set his glass down on the desk with a sharp clank, pushed away from the wood, and closed the distance between us so fast I didn't even have time to step back.

He backed me up against the heavy wooden door of the study until my spine pressed flat against the solid oak.

His hands came up, slamming flat against the wood on either side of my head, trapping me completely within the warm, dangerous perimeter of his body.

“Who said it was a lie, Emma?” he asked, his voice dropping into a low, rough whisper that made my breath catch in my throat.

I stared up at him, my eyes wide behind my wire-rimmed glasses.

“What… what are you talking about?”

Luca lowered his face inches from mine, his dark eyes burning with an intensity that felt entirely too real, too raw, to be part of any corporate strategy or family manipulation.

“When I told my family tonight that you were the only woman I would ever choose,” Luca murmured, his gaze dropping slowly to my lips before rising back to meet my eyes, “I wasn't acting, Emma.”

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird.

“Luca… you can’t mean that. We work together. You’re my boss. This is insane.”

“Maybe it is,” Luca agreed, his hand moving from the door to cup my cheek, his thumb gently stroking my skin just below my glasses.

May you like

“Ever since you walked into my office two years ago with your hair in that tight little knot and your legal pad gripped like a weapon, you’ve been the only distraction I couldn't ignore. I brought you here tonight because I needed an excuse to claim you. And now that you’re here…”

He leaned in closer, his breath warm against my mouth.
