Chapter 8 - The Truth Beneath the Ice: Realizing the Scale of Luca’s Trap

“You set me up,” I whispered, the words slipping out before I could stop them.

I turned my head to look up at Luca, the betrayal stinging sharp and hot behind my ribs.

“You didn't just need a fake date to deflect your aunts, Luca. You needed a grenade to blow up the Rossi merger before your uncles could force your hand.”

Luca’s dark eyes flashed with a sudden, raw panic that he immediately tried to mask behind his cold exterior.

“Emma, look at me,” he said, his hand tightening around mine until my fingers ached.

“I didn't bring you here to use you. I brought you here because my family was trying to sell my life to the highest bidder, and you were the only real thing I had left to fight with.”

“How romantic,” Julian mocked from across the room, swirling his glass.

“A modern-day fairy tale. The billionaire and his obedient little assistant staging a rebellion against the patriarchy. Unfortunately for you, cousin, romance doesn't override corporate law. The Rossi alliance papers were signed by Uncle Marco this morning using executive proxy power.”

Uncle Marco smiled, raising his crystal glass toward Luca in a silent, mocking toast.

“Merry Christmas, nephew,” Marco said smoothly.

“You’re marrying Isabella Rossi in April. Whether you bring your assistant along as a bridesmaid or a parting gift is entirely up to you.”

The fury that erupted inside Luca in that single second was terrifying to behold.

It wasn't the cold, calculated coldness he used in boardrooms; it was the raw, primal rage of a man whose cage had just been locked from the outside.

Before anyone could blink, Luca stepped forward, his massive frame radiating a lethal, violent energy that made Uncle Marco take two hurried steps backward in sudden, genuine terror.

“If you or the council think for one second that I will ever honor a proxy signature executed behind my back,” Luca said, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet growl that vibrated off the stone fireplace, “you fundamentally underestimate how much blood I am willing to spill to burn this entire family to the ground.”

“Luca!” Don Lorenzo’s voice cracked across the room like a whip, halting him in his tracks.

The old man banged his ebony cane against the hardwood floor with surprising strength.

“Enough!”

The patriarch glared at his grandson, his milky eyes blazing with decades of unyielding authority.

“You think you are the first Moretti to try to break the chain, boy? Your father tried it. And he paid for it with his life. You will marry Isabella Rossi, you will secure the syndicate alliance, and you will maintain the stability of this family—or I swear to you, I will strip Moretti Holdings from your hands before the snow melts.”

The room was dead silent.

The air felt impossibly heavy, charged with the ancient, dark weight of a dynasty built on blood, fear, and absolute control.

I looked at Luca.

I saw the jagged edges of his pain, the unbearable burden of a legacy he had never asked to inherit, and the desperate, burning way he looked at me as if I were his only anchor in a rising tide of darkness.

Without thinking—without calculating the professional consequences, the social danger, or the terrifying reality of what I was stepping into—I pulled my hand from his grip, stepped forward, and stood directly between Luca and the patriarch.

“He’s not marrying Isabella Rossi,” I said, my voice ringing clear and steady through the grand drawing room.
