Chapter 6 - The Counter-Offensive

Within two hours, Julian and I had locked down every secondary server gateway across Veyra Systems, deploying an emergency security protocol that required multi-factor biometric authentication for every single executive-level transaction. I sat in my office, watching the global network traffic monitor as red warning indicators flashed across the secondary display screens, signaling unauthorized access attempts originating from an external IP address registered to a private residence in the exclusive hills outside the city.

The private residence belonged to Evelyn Cole.

My office door swung open without a knock, and Naomi Chen strode in, holding a fresh stack of printed legal filings. Her expression was grim, but her eyes held a spark of fierce determination.

“Federal district court just granted our emergency injunction,” Naomi announced, placing the documents on my desk. “Evelyn and Richard are officially barred from entering any Veyra facilities, and all corporate assets held under their family trust have been placed into court-supervised receivership. But that’s not the most interesting thing happening right now.”

I looked up from the terminal. “What is it?”

“Adrian just tried to book a private charter flight to Zurich out of the municipal airfield,” Naomi said, a thin smile touching the corner of her lips. “The federal marshals intercepted him at the tarmac twenty minutes ago. They didn’t arrest him yet, but they confiscated his passport and his encrypted burner phone.”

I stood up from my desk, buttoning my blazer with precise, deliberate movements. “It’s time for a family reunion.”

One hour later, the glass-walled conference room on the forty-second floor was packed once again, but the atmosphere had shifted entirely. Evelyn Cole sat at the opposite end of the obsidian table, her face pale beneath her makeup, flanked by a high-priced criminal defense attorney whose expensive suit couldn’t hide his visible nervousness. Richard Vance sat beside her, staring blankly at his hands.

The double doors opened, and Adrian was escorted into the room by two private security guards, his hair disheveled and his designer tuxedo jacket missing its cufflinks. He looked smaller, stripped of the arrogant armor he had worn so effortlessly at the wedding altar.

Evelyn slammed her hand against the table, glaring at me with unadulterated venom. “You can’t do this, Mara! This is a corporate coup! We will sue you into oblivion for malicious prosecution!”

I walked slowly around the table until I was standing directly across from her, my voice unnervingly calm in the charged silence of the room.

“You tried to steal a multi-billion-dollar company by forging a marital proxy, Evelyn,” I said, looking down at her with steady composure. “You used your son as a pawn in a premeditated corporate heist, and you thought my emotional attachment to Daniel’s memory would make me too weak to fight back.”

Adrian looked up from his chair, his voice cracking with desperate confusion. “Mara... please. We were going to share everything. I loved you.”

May you like

“No, Adrian,” I said quietly, leaning down slightly so he could hear every word. “You loved the power. You loved the control. But most of all, you loved the illusion that I was someone you could rewrite like a line of faulty code.”

Evelyn’s defense attorney leaned over, whispering frantically in her ear as he glanced at the federal injunction papers spread across the table. He realized, just as Richard had hours earlier, that there was no legal loophole left to exploit.
