Chapter 8 - Rebuilding the Core

The morning after the board coup, the front pages of every major financial publication featured Veyra Systems in bold headlines. The narrative was sharp and unsparing: Tech Heiress Exposes Husband’s Wedding-Day Corporate Heist. Photos of Adrian standing frozen at the altar next to my empty wedding ring circulated across digital news feeds worldwide, turning our failed union into a case study in corporate espionage and marital betrayal.
I sat at my desk before sunrise, reviewing the revised cap-table metrics on my terminal. With Adrian and Evelyn’s shares successfully frozen and transferred into court-supervised receivership pending final forfeiture, my controlling stake in Veyra Systems had risen to an unprecedented eighty-one percent.
Chloe knocked softly on the open door before stepping into the office, holding a thick leather-bound dossier.
“Mara, the engineering department has completed the full system diagnostic following Julian’s security audit,” Chloe said, placing the dossier on the corner of my desk. “Every single unauthorized backdoor planted by Richard Vance during his tenure has been completely purged and overwritten with zero-trust encryption protocols.”
“Good,” I said, looking up from my screen. “What about the upcoming institutional investor briefing? Are the major venture funds still backing our standalone expansion?”
“They’re lining up outside the door,” Chloe replied with a faint smile. “Once word got out that you single-handedly dismantled the Horizon Corp acquisition attempt and secured majority voting control, three major sovereign wealth funds reached out directly wanting to increase their capital allocation into our core artificial intelligence division.”
Later that afternoon, I called a full company-wide town hall meeting in the main ground-floor atrium. Hundreds of software engineers, data analysts, and administrative staff filled the multi-story lobby, their faces turned upward toward the central balcony where I stood beside Julian and Naomi.
When I stepped up to the microphone, the scattered murmurs in the room died down into absolute silence.
“Three days ago, Veyra Systems was standing on the edge of a precipice,” I began, my voice carrying clearly through the acoustic architecture of the atrium. “External pressures and internal betrayals sought to compromise the foundational principles upon which this company was built. We were told that caution was a weakness, that emotion was a liability, and that power belonged only to those willing to forge signatures in secret.”
A low murmur of agreement rippled through the gathered crowd.

“They were wrong,” I continued, my gaze sweeping across the sea of attentive faces. “Veyra was built on code, on transparency, and on uncompromising integrity. Today, we are turning the page on a dark chapter of corporate manipulation. We are returning to our roots—focusing on ethical artificial intelligence, open collaboration, and true innovation that serves our users, not corrupt boardrooms.”
The applause that erupted from the atrium was deafening, echoing up through the glass floors and steel beams of the tower. For the first time in months, the heavy weight that had rested on my shoulders lifted completely.
