Chapter 4 - A Society Wedding Built on Sand

Despite the tightening financial noose around Ashbourne Manor, William refused to show weakness to the public.

He poured what remained of his emergency credit reserves into throwing the most extravagant society wedding of the decade.

He needed the world to believe that the Carter dynasty was flourishing under its new, younger matriarch.

Claire spent days boasting to society reporters about her custom French bridal lace and her upcoming male heir.

Every high-society magazine featured Claire on its cover, branding her as the radiant new Duchess of Ashbourne.

Yet on the morning of the wedding, the grand cathedral was only half full of the prominent guests William expected.

Many key political figures and high-profile investors had quietly declined their invitations with polite excuses.

Rumors of Evelyn’s aggressive Manhattan legal moves had already begun circulating among the financial elite.

William stood at the altar, feeling uncomfortably warm inside his heavy formal military dress uniform.

Claire walked down the aisle with a radiant smile, her baby bump framed by yards of imported vintage lace.

She believed this walk would solidify her status forever and banish the ghost of Evelyn from the aristocracy.

When she reached William, she whispered, “Today, we take our rightful place, my love.”

William forced a stiff smile, trying to ignore the gnawing anxiety eating at his stomach.

The archbishop began the traditional service, reciting ancient vows regarding lineage, loyalty, and duty.

“If anyone knows any reason why these two should not be joined in holy matrimony, speak now or forever hold your peace.”

The standard pause fell over the cathedral, an empty ceremonial formality that usually passed in complete silence.

Suddenly, the heavy oak doors at the back of the cathedral swung open with a resounding, thunderous crash.

The congregation gasped in unison, every head turning around to see who dared disrupt the ducal ceremony.

Stepping through the threshold was not Evelyn, but a distinguished man in a dark three-piece Italian suit.

Beside him walked Sophia, Clara, and little Lily, dressed in magnificent matching sapphire-blue couture coats.

The three girls walked with immaculate poise and confidence, showing not an ounce of fear or hesitation.

The distinguished gentleman beside them was Julian Vance, the most feared bankruptcy and corporate recovery attorney in America.

“I apologize for the dramatic interruption, Your Grace,” Julian’s deep voice projected cleanly through the nave.

“However, the Supreme Court has issued an emergency injunction freezing all personal and estate assets of William Carter.”

Claire’s bouquet fell from her trembling hands, crushing white roses against the cold stone floor.

“What is the meaning of this insolence?” William shouted from the altar, his face contorting with rage.

“Security! Escort this madman and these children out of the church immediately!”

None of the security guards moved an inch; they recognized the armed federal marshals standing directly behind Julian.

Sophia stepped forward slightly, looking up at her father with eyes that held no warmth and no regret.

“Father, you told us we failed this family because we were born daughters,” Sophia spoke clearly for all to hear.

Her crisp, young voice echoed through the sacred cathedral, reaching every microphone and every society reporter.

“Our mother asked us to deliver a small wedding gift to you and your new bride.”

Julian stepped forward and handed a crimson leather portfolio directly to the flabbergasted archbishop.

“The Duke has pledged Ashbourne Manor as collateral for his wedding debts,” Julian announced to the stunned crowd.

“Unfortunately, Ashbourne Manor does not belong to William Carter.”

“The deed, the grounds, and the family name’s commercial rights were legally purchased at private auction yesterday.”

“The sole owner of the Carter estate is now Vanguard Continental Holdings.”

“And the majority shareholder of Vanguard is none other than your first wife, Evelyn Carter.”

Claire let out a piercing shriek, clutching her stomach as she leaned heavily against the marble altar.

“That’s a lie! You’re lying!” Claire shrieked, her voice cracking before the entire stunned congregation.

“William, tell them he is lying! Tell them we own this estate!”

William could not speak; his throat was completely parched, his chest heaving under the weight of sheer panic.

Sophia looked at Claire calmly, her expression mirroring her mother’s chilling smile from six months prior.

“Welcome to the family, Claire,” Sophia said softly.

“Enjoy the wedding, because the eviction notice for our house arrives promptly at nine o'clock tomorrow morning.”
