Chapter 8 - Claire’s Desperate Blackmail Scheme

Stripped of her luxury suites and cast out of high society, Claire Whitmore retreated to a cheap suburban motel.
Her expensive wardrobe hung awkwardly on rusty wire hangers against water-stained drywall.
The reality of her pregnancy, combined with the loss of all financial backing, drove her toward reckless desperation.
She knew that William was completely broken, living out of a dingy studio apartment funded by pawned watches.
She needed a massive settlement, and she was convinced Evelyn had a hidden vulnerability waiting to be exploited.
For three days, Claire dug through old paper files she had stolen from William’s private home safe before the eviction.
Among the yellowing documents, she found an unrecorded prenuptial draft from eleven years ago, before Evelyn’s wedding.
The draft contained a handwritten confidentiality clause regarding the source of Evelyn’s initial Chicago seed capital.
Claire believed she had found the silver bullet: proof of illegal offshore funding that could bring Evelyn down.
She immediately contacted Julian Vance’s office, demanding a private meeting at an upscale hotel lounge in midtown.
She promised that if Evelyn did not pay her a five-million-dollar cash exit settlement, the documents would go to the IRS.
When the meeting time arrived, Claire sat in a secluded corner booth, nervously sipping iced herbal tea.
She wore her last remaining designer trench coat, clutching the leather folder containing the stolen papers like a lifeline.
The heavy brass doors opened, but it was not Julian Vance who arrived to negotiate the surrender.
It was Evelyn Carter herself, accompanied by two silent plainclothes investigators wearing audio earpieces.
Claire stiffened, her arrogant smirk returning as she leaned across the polished walnut table.
“You shouldn't have come alone, Evelyn,” Claire sneered, tapping the folder with a chipped, manicured nail.
“Inside this folder is proof that your entire empire was launched with untaxed offshore money from the Illinois trust.”
“One phone call to the federal prosecutor, and your precious Vanguard Holdings will be seized by the government.”
Evelyn did not sit down; she stood beside the table, looking down at Claire as if observing an annoying insect.
“Did you actually read the documents inside that folder, Claire?” Evelyn asked, her voice entirely flat and unimpressed.
“Or did you merely scan the bank logos and assume you had discovered a grand criminal conspiracy?”
Claire hesitated, a flicker of uncertainty flashing across her eyes before she shoved the folder forward.
“It shows five million dollars wired from an unregistered trust in Zurich directly into your private legal firm!”
Evelyn signaled one of her investigators, who placed an identical, officially stamped blue binder on the table.
“That Zurich trust was not an offshore tax haven, Claire,” Evelyn said with crushing intellectual superiority.
“It was the personal compensation estate paid out by the Swiss railway authority following the tragic death of my parents.”
“Every single cent was audited, declared, and taxed by the United States federal government twelve years ago.”
Claire’s face drained of color as she opened the blue binder, seeing the official IRS release stamps on every page.
“Furthermore,” Evelyn continued, leaning down slightly until her face was inches from Claire’s trembling visage.
“Those documents were stolen from a sealed estate safe during an active eviction order issued by the Supreme Court.”
“Which means you have just committed felony possession of stolen corporate property and attempted grand extortion.”
From the adjoining booth, two federal agents in dark suits stood up, revealing their official badges.
“Claire Whitmore, you are under arrest for extortion and interstate fraud,” the lead federal agent stated coldly.
Claire screamed, jumping up from the booth so quickly that her teacup shattered across the polished parquet floor.
“No! You can’t arrest me! I’m pregnant! I’m having a baby!” Claire shrieked, clutching her stomach in panic.
The female agent calmly stepped forward and produced soft medical restraints, securing Claire’s wrists without violence.
“Your medical condition will be monitored by certified federal physicians at the metropolitan detention center, Miss Whitmore.”
Claire turned back toward Evelyn, weeping hysterically as the reality of a long prison sentence closed in around her.
“Evelyn, please! We are both women! Think of the child I’m carrying! She is William’s blood!” Claire pleaded.
Evelyn looked at Claire’s tear-stained face, her expression carrying no triumph, only cold, unyielding justice.
“I do think of that innocent child, Claire,” Evelyn answered softly before turning toward the exit.

“And that is why I will ensure she is placed with a loving, stable family the second she enters this world.”
“Because no innocent daughter deserves to be raised by someone who treated children like bargaining chips.”
